The UK doesn\u2019t plan on introducing AI<\/a> regulation anytime soon \u2014 in contrast to the EU\u2019s and China\u2019s strict legislation efforts.<\/p>\n

During a Financial Times conference on Thursday, the country\u2019s first minister for AI and intellectual property, Viscount Jonathan Camrose, confirmed government concerns over regulation curbing growth and said<\/a> that a UK<\/a> law on artificial intelligence won\u2019t be coming \u201cin the short term.\u201d<\/p>\n

While he refrained from critising other nations\u2019 approaches, he noted that \u201cthere is always a risk of premature regulation,\u201d which could do more harm than good by \u201cstifling innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statements come as no surprise and are on par with the UK\u2019s overall vision to transform itself into an AI-enabled country and economy.<\/p>\n

In a white paper<\/a> published in March, officials already put forward a clear, pro-innovation agenda, noting that a heavy-handed and rigid approach would slow AI adoption.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo ensure we become an AI superpower, it is crucial that we do all we can to create the right environment to harness the benefits of AI and remain at the forefront of technological developments,\u201d Michelle Donelan, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, wrote<\/a> in the paper. \u201cThat includes getting regulation right so that innovators can thrive and the risks posed by AI can be addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UK has also introduced a designated AI taskforce<\/a> to boost the development of foundation models, while Rishi Sunak has been bedding with big tech<\/a> and has secured \u201cearly access<\/a>\u201d to the models of DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the EU, the US, and China are moving closer to overreaching, risk-based legislation. It remains to be seen whether the UK\u2019s intended lax regulatory environment can strike the right balance \u2014 especially amidst recurring calls<\/a> to ensure regulatory safeguards before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n
