The watershed moment arrived at the end of the previous year, with the November 30 release of ChatGPT. Just two months later, the OpenAI system was reaching an estimated 100 million active users. According to analysts at investment bank UBS, the headline-grabbing chatbot had become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/chatgpt-sets-record-fastest-growing-user-base-analyst-note-2023-02-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fastest-growing<\/a> consumer app of all time.<\/p>\n<p><span>Over the remaining course of 2023, the hype train went into overdrive. Suddenly, AI seemed to be everywhere. It was transforming our lives. It was taking our jobs. It was even threatening to cause <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ai-poses-risk-of-extinction-warn-european-tech-luminaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an apocalypse<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In reality, however, the breakthroughs have largely emerged within a single portion of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>artificial intelligence<\/span><\/a><span>: generative AI. In recent research from Infosys, the Indian IT giant found only 6% of European companies are producing business value with their GenAI use cases. In 2024, they expect a cautious and pragmatic approach to AI adoption.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBoardrooms need proof that these investments will increase the bottom line,\u201d said Adi Andrei, the director of the UK\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/technosophics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Technosophics<\/span><\/a><span> and a former senior data scientist at NASA. \u201cA lot of money and effort has been poured into monetising ChatGPT and similar GenAI solutions, but the results are lacking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One critical shortcoming is the <\/span>inaccuracies <span>caused by AI <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ai-hallucinations-solution-iris-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>hallucinations<\/span><\/a><span>. While the remarkable text produced by large language models (LLMs) offers a veneer of reason, beneath the surface they merely calculate the probable order of different words. Those odds don\u2019t always deliver reliable results.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSuch superficial intelligence is not always valuable and reliable, and the industry is waking up to reality,\u201d Andrei said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Entering new spaces<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Despite the challenges, GenAI is expected enter a growing range of industries in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to McKinsey\u2019s research, businesses that rely on knowledge work have the most to gain. The consulting firm expects tech companies to reap the biggest benefits, adding the equivalent of up to 9% of global industry revenue. Others sectors set to cash in are banking (up to 5%), pharmaceuticals and medical products (also up to 5%), and education (up to 4%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\" readability=\"29\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\" readability=\"32\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cMarket watchers find something else to look at.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ali Chaudhry, the founder of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/london-reinforcement-learning-community\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Generative AI and RL Community<\/span><\/a><span> in London, predicts that the tech will also spread into manufacturing, engineering, automotive, aerospace, and energy industries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnfortunately, given the ongoing political situation across the globe, we might as well witness growing investments in AI applications in the defense sector,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In many sectors, however, the uptake will be gradual. In the games industry, for instance, monetising AI remains challenging for most players. Paraag Amin, CFO of Slovakian startup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/superscale.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>SuperScale<\/span><\/a><span>, a growth platform for games, doesn\u2019t anticipate real revenues to emerge before 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAdopting AI and associated tools into widespread processes takes time,\u201d <\/span><span>Amin told TNW. <\/span><span>\u201cIn this integration and adoption phase, monetization models will continue to evolve, and also compete with free or freemium offerings. This makes driving short-term revenue more difficult until these models stabilize and winners emerge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Future fears<\/h2>\n<p><span>There are also growing concerns about AI\u2019s inroads into nefarious applications. The technique is commonplace in LLMs, but the practice&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><span>Critics are now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ed-newton-rex-making-generative-ai-fair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>calling for curbs<\/span><\/a><span> on the practice. <\/span><span>Juras Jur\u0161\u0117nas, the chief operating officer at web intelligence platform <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/74n5c4m7.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me\/L0\/https:%2F%2Foxylabs.io%2Fabout-us\/1\/0102018c38f80776-21f9d73e-a43b-4dac-ae09-7b53cd515f06-000000\/WQ1N19kRgXlB_etpZUT_7Q-aT_s=350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Oxylabs<\/span><\/a><span>, warns that reining in data scraping will have mixed results.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnfortunately, restrictions on public web data collection might delay innovations in the AI field,\u201d she said. \u201cOn the other hand, the web data collection industry has long lacked clear guidelines and answers regarding data ownership, privacy, and data aggregation at scale. So, we hope that case law will start clearing up those grey zones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Further legal clarity could emerge from regulation. Around the world, g<span>overnments are taking diverging paths to control the tech. The EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-ai-act-deal-regulation-artificial-intelligence-inside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI Act<\/a> applies a sweeping set of rules and a risk-based approach, while the US is following a more sector-specific model that aims to reduce the red tape. In the UK, the intervention has thus far fallen somewhere between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat this means is that we\u2019re going to see three distinct rule books develop across these three markets,\u201d said <\/span><span>Richard Bownes, principal for AI and ML at digital consultancy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinandcarta.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Kin + Carta<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201c<\/span><span>2024 will see these rulebooks get tighter, which is going to catch out those companies who didn\u2019t start building their data infrastructure that underpins AI use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The tip of the AI iceberg<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Amid the increasing restrictions and fading hype, analysts expect GenAI to leave a positive legacy for the broader realm of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p><span>The experiences and technological advances will provide valuable insights, investments, and IT stacks for the sector. In 2024, other emerging techniques could take advantage of the GenAI boom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jur\u0161\u0117nas highlights two particularly promising contenders. The first is federated learning, which enables the training of ML algorithms without direct access to private data. As a result, efficiencies, performance, algorithms, and privacy could all be enhanced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The second is causal AI, which seeks to reduce bias and increase accuracy by equating correlation with causation.
