Yesterday, the lander was propelled into space aboard a Vulcan rocket from Cape Canaveral space station.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"528dcdda-b513-4c8f-8695-eca5261af39b\">The EMS will explore the Moon\u2019s atmosphere, by measuring water and other molecules, unlocking the mysteries of its water cycle. British scientists at The Open University and RAL Space, the UK\u2019s national space lab, developed the sensor with \u00a314mn in funding from the European Space Agency (ESA).<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"2c5477f6-b2e8-4d56-80b5-320db6001f2c\">Years in the making, the EMS is part of a larger scientific instrument jointly developed by NASA and ESA, known as the Peregrine Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS). PITMS will \u201csniff out\u201d lunar gases, providing valuable insights into lunar composition and conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"fbb6ca1e-d4d7-4a65-8078-900fb902dc49\">NASA expects PITMS will contribute to our understanding of the moon\u2019s potential to provide resources like water, opening new possibilities for future human presence on the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\" readability=\"0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/conference\/startups?utm_source=TNW-media&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=TNW2024Startup\" data-event-category=\"Article\" data-event-action=\"In Article Block\" data-event-label=\"TNW Conference 2024 - Calling all Startups to join on June 20-21\" target=\"_blank\" readability=\"6\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">TNW Conference 2024 &#8211; Calling all Startups to join on June 20-21<\/p>\n<p>Showcase your startup in front of investors, change-makers and potential customers with our curated Startup packages.<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-block-id=\"e077ef6f-e681-490d-a3c4-fbaf8cd0b73d\">The ESA has hailed the launch as a historic milestone for Europe\u2019s space sector. \u201cAs the first ESA payload destined to land on the lunar surface, the EMS is a groundbreaking instrument for ESA, both as a technology demonstrator and for lunar science,\u201d said project manager Roland Trautner.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"6e675e24-d4a3-4c88-b072-2adab4ded885\">The Peregrine lander is set to spend time orbiting Earth and then the Moon, before beginning its descent and historic lunar landing, expected to be around mid-February.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"a408afbd-3474-4daf-97b5-6db761c54206\">But just hours after the launch yesterday, Astrobotic Technology, the US company that built the lander, reported it had experienced a \u201ccritical loss of propellant.\u201d The spacecraft has failed to point properly towards the sun, which meant that its solar-powered batteries were not charging.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"1a0b5711-b347-409a-a512-266351fe4a03\">\u201cThe team is working to try and stabilise this loss, but given the situation, we have prioritised maximizing the science and data we can capture. It is also a major blow for Astrobotic Technology, who had high hopes of becoming the first-ever private company to land on the moon.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"6d5c2771-4b40-44a6-8f9e-c0abc7d76f0c\">If <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/failure-of-historic-uk-virgin-orbit-satellite-rocket-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous mission failures<\/a> are anything to go by, the chances of a take-two is unlikely anytime soon.
