Antitrust regulators in the EU have joined their British counterparts in scrutinising Microsoft\u2019s alliance with OpenAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The European Commission, the bloc\u2019s executive arm, said on Tuesday that it\u2019s \u201cchecking whether the partnership should be reviewed under the EU Merger Regulation.\u201d If such a review is required, it could put the multibillion-dollar deal in danger.<\/span><\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s announcement comes just weeks after British regulators made a similar move.<\/p>\n

In December, the UK\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) revealed that it was considering a probe of Microsoft\u2019s $13bn (\u20ac11.9bn) investment into the ChatGPT maker. <\/span>The watchdog cited concerns that the partnership could hurt UK competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft<\/a> began backing OpenAI back in 2019. Since then, the Redmond company has exponentially increased its investment, integrated OpenAI\u2019s tech into Office, Windows, and Bing, and supplied the startup with Azure Cloud tools.<\/p>\n

Microsoft also became embroiled in the recent saga over the leadership of OpenAI. After CEO Sam Altman was controversially ousted in November, the Windows maker pushed for his reinstatement. Altman was rehired days later.<\/p>\n

Despite the growing ties between the companies, Microsoft noted that it doesn\u2019t own any equity stake in OpenAI.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince 2019, we\u2019ve forged a partnership with OpenAI that has fostered more AI<\/a> innovation and competition, while preserving independence for both companies,\u201d a company spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing that has changed recently is that Microsoft will now have a non-voting observer on OpenAI\u2019s Board.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EU will now scrutinise those arrangements. Any interested parties should submit their views<\/a> on the deal by March 11.<\/span><\/p>\n
