Tha<\/span><span>t is four times as far as competitors like&nbsp; German <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eVTOL<\/a> startup Lilium are targeting using batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It will achieve these feats thanks to liquid hydrogen propulsion, which some consider the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/energy-transition\/111621-liquid-hydrogen-seen-as-holy-grail-for-hydrogen-uptake-in-mobility-sector-linde-coo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>holy grail<\/span><\/a><span> of fuels. To us, this seems like a bit of a waste for all the novel tech needed to design, produce, and certify the aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first demonstration flights for both VTOLs are scheduled for next year. The use of liquid hydrogen especially is a massive hurdle. It was only last September that H2Fly made the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/world-first-piloted-liquid-hydrogen-plane-takes-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>world\u2019s first piloted flight of a liquid H2-powered plane<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Liquid hydrogen needs to be stored at below -253 \u00b0C at all phases of distribution, filling, and flight. This presents huge logistical challenges, not just in the design of the plane but also the production, storage, and delivery of the fuel itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then there\u2019s the fact that the aviation certification process is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/generalaviationnews.com\/2012\/09\/09\/the-cost-of-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>notoriously expensive<\/span><\/a><span>. While BMW has helped design the jet, there is no evidence to suggest that the automotive giant will extend its involvement further than that.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Moreover, Sirius is planning to develop everything themselves, including the liquid hydrogen powertrain. No one has even got a gaseous hydrogen plane certified yet, let alone in commercial operation, so I can\u2019t imagine how much time and money it\u2019ll take for the liquid equivalent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Overall, it\u2019s a seriously ambitious timeline, which seems to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/another-european-evtol-startup-delays-launch-certification-hurdles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>recurring theme<\/span><\/a><span> in the eVTOL startup space.
