{"id":14273,"date":"2024-01-18T16:17:30","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T16:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1403146"},"modified":"2024-01-18T16:17:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T16:17:30","slug":"eu-wants-music-streaming-platforms-to-pay-artists-more-fairly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=14273","title":{"rendered":"EU wants music streaming platforms to pay artists more fairly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/tnw-blurple?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2024%2F01%2Fmusic-streaming-EU.jpg&amp;signature=212d329f8ec3e82953ee86923201d77b\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Parliament<\/a> has called for more fairness and transparency in the music streaming sector, including better pay for smaller artists.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) overwhelmingly voted to adopt the new resolution on Wednesday. <\/span><span>The motion aims to ensure European musical works avoid being overshadowed by the \u201coverwhelming amount\u201d of content being continually added to streaming platforms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Parliament is giving voice to the concerns of European creators, who are at the heart of the music streaming market,\u201d said rapporteur Ib\u00e1n Garc\u00eda del Blanco in an EU press release. This includes preserving the \u201ccultural and linguistic diversity\u201d of music, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is similar to <\/span><span>efforts in other countries such as Canada,<\/span><span> which passed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-65420133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Online Streaming Act<\/span><\/a><span> to support Canadian artists. Music streaming services might end up doing something similar.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The proposal also calls for \u201cpre-digital royalty rates\u201d to be revised, condemning the so-called \u201cpayola schemes\u201d that force authors to accept lower or no revenues in exchange for greater exposure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The MEPs <\/span><span>also urged platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/spotify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a> to make their recommendation algorithms more transparent, to disclose when songs are AI-made, and to crack down on deepfakes. Music streaming platforms are not doing enough to tackle algorithmic biases that favour major record labels and famous artists, they said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPlatforms should make their algorithms and recommendation tools transparent, to prevent unfair practices, such as manipulation of streaming figures, which is allegedly used to reduce artists\u2019 fees,\u201dsaid the parliamentarians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>MEPs also suggested introducing a label to inform the public when the songs they listen to have been generated by AI and urged for stricter measures to tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/deepfake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deepfakes<\/a> on music streaming platforms \u2014 similar to what French streaming service<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/as-ai-made-music-explodes-deezer-lays-out-strategy-to-identify-ai-tracks-and-weed-out-illegal-and-fraudulent-content-on-its-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Deezer started doing last year<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While MEPs have overwhelmingly accepted that these issues need to be addressed, the resolution itself is nonlegislative.
