{"id":14403,"date":"2024-02-12T14:30:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-12T14:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1403790"},"modified":"2024-02-12T14:30:47","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T14:30:47","slug":"dutch-startup-wins-e15m-to-develop-first-solid-state-battery-factory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=14403","title":{"rendered":"Dutch startup wins \u20ac15M to develop first solid-state battery factory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/tnw-blurple?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2024%2F02%2Flionvolt-soild-state-battery.jpg&amp;signature=17fb3479aaa86712c99d28c269f70c34\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>As the world electrifies, the race is on to build better batteries that take you further, charge faster, are safer, and more sustainable.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dutch <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">startup<\/a> LionVolt is developing 3D solid-state batteries that it says ticks all the above \u2014 and it\u2019s just raised \u20ac15mn to scale up production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>LionVolt \u2014 a spinout from TNO\u2019s Holst Centre in Eindhoven, the Netherlands \u2014 is working on solid-state batteries that don\u2019t contain the liquid lithium common in standard lithium-ion devices.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Instead, the batteries are made up of a thin film containing billions of solid pillars, creating a patented 3D architecture with a large surface area. Compared to lithium batteries, the ions only have to travel a short distance, which makes charging and discharging much faster. Offer Ends on Monday 12 February<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>As the startup\u2019s CEO and co-founder <\/span><span>Karl McGoldrick previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/european-startups-better-battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a><span> to TNW, <\/span><span>the heightened surface area inside the battery allows for an almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amprius.com\/the-all-new-amprius-500-wh-kg-battery-platform-is-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>record-breaking<\/span><\/a><span> energy density of 450 Wh\/kg. <\/span><span>Tesla\u2019s 4,680 cells, for comparison, measure somewhere between 244-296 Wh\/kg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>LionVolt further claims its batteries weigh 50% less and provide 200% better performance compared to the most advanced lithium-ion batteries available today. The cells can already be used in wearables, but the company eventually plans to build a gigafactory in Eindhoven to make batteries for EVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Armed with fresh equity funding, which brings the company\u2019s total raised so far to \u20ac30mn, LionVolt looks to embark on the next phase of growth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>A big thank you to our investors for their confidence in us,\u201d the company said on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7160918766275469312\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>LinkedIn<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cLooking forward to accelerating LionVolt as a leading next-gen battery company by leveraging the core strengths of our teams in the Netherlands and the UK.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The announcement com<\/span><span>es just two weeks after LionVolt acquired AMTE Power, pulling the Scottish battery cell manufacturer out of administration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>AMTE Power, which went <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/12\/19\/scottish-battery-factory-bust-britain-net-zero-industry\/#:~:text=AMTE%20Power%2C%20a%20high%2Dperformance,or%20help%20from%20existing%20shareholders.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>bankrupt<\/span><\/a><span> in December, specialised in lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells used in high performance EV batteries and long-duration energy storage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the deal, LionVolt now owns the company\u2019s battery-cell manufacturing and production businesses based in Thurso, Scotland. It will repurpose the site to produce its own solid-state battery technology.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sandeep Unnikrishnan, CTO of LionVolt, called it a \u201cdream scenario\u201d for a deeptech company like theirs. \u201cIt helps us mature our innovative 3D battery technology quicker by leveraging the manufacturing expertise from the team in Scotland, thereby reducing time-to-market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a busy start to the year for LionVolt, the startup also secured a space to set up its first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/innovationorigins.com\/en\/lionvolt-chooses-brainport-industries-campus-for-the-production-of-its-solid-state-batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>pilot production plant<\/span><\/a><span> at the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) in Eindhoven.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>LionVolt\u2019s recent successes are good news for the EU, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/infographics\/battery-supply-chain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>pushing<\/span><\/a><span> to increase its share of battery production amid an industry dominated by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/europes-homegrown-battery-cells-could-end-reliance-on-china-by-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>cheap imports<\/span><\/a><span> from China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Back in 2019, the bloc invested a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/discover\/record-%E2%82%AC60bn-investment-electric-cars-and-batteries-europe-secured-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>whopping<\/span><\/a><span> \u20ac60bn into domestic EVs and battery production, which undoubtedly helped some of Europe\u2019s most promising startups, such as Northvolt, scale to where they are now.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As numerous other companies, such as CATL in China or Toyota in Japan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6224f235-568c-4e2f-8247-e7dacf0ef20c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>announce breakthroughs<\/span><\/a><span> in solid-state batteries, Europe will no doubt have to double down on funding.
