{"id":14545,"date":"2024-03-06T10:05:35","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T10:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1404591"},"modified":"2024-03-06T10:05:35","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T10:05:35","slug":"uk-startup-launches-ai-satellite-to-provide-near-real-time-images-of-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=14545","title":{"rendered":"UK startup launches AI satellite to provide near real-time images of Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>UK-based space tech <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">startup<\/a> Open Cosmos has successfully launched a new AI-powered satellite that can provide near real-time views of Earth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The satellite, HAMMER \u2014 short for <\/span><span>Hyperspectral AI for Marine Monitoring and Emergency Response \u2014 was successfully blasted into orbit Monday aboard a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/spacex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a> Falcon 9 rocket.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Its mission is to provide high-resolution imaging from across the Atlantic ocean to help authorities monitor the marine environment or respond to natural disasters as they happen.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Key to HAMMER\u2019s abilities is, you guessed it, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a>. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>However, the HAMMER has been fitted with an onboard image processor powered by AI inference thatcan process and transmit data to Earth within minutes \u2014 a system dubbed \u201clive Earth intelligence\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In what is billed as a world-first, this information can be accessed via a mobile app. \u201c<\/span><span>The two-way communication allows them to send commands back to the satellite, requesting closer observations or directing it to new areas,\u201d explained <\/span><span>Sean Mitchell, chief commercial officer at Ubotica, an Irish company that helped Open Cosmos develop the AI system.<\/span> <span>&nbsp;<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>HAMMER is equipped with a super high-resolution hyperspectral camera. The camera captures images across hundreds of narrow spectral bands, revealing the chemical makeup of objects. This enables the satellite to detect chemical signatures like a potential oil spill or determine the material makeup of buildings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe inclusion of a hyperspectral camera and AI board ensure the most advanced imaging in the market,\u201d said Oriol Aragon Casaled, mission manager at Open Cosmos.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the satellite is currently focussed on marine missions, its creators say future iterations of the device have several potential applications, including for precision agriculture, energy infrastructure monitoring, and land-based disaster response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Late last year, Open Cosmos raised a sizable $50mn t<\/span><span>o expand the startup and develop larger satellites and even whole constellations.
