A distinctly British scandal caused by sloppy photo editing has sparked calls for watermarking untouched images.<\/p>\n

The pleas come after a picture of Princess Kate intensified wild rumours about her whereabouts.<\/p>\n

Kate\u2019s representatives issued the image this week to subdue gossip about her recent absence from the public eye.<\/span> Newspapers and websites promptly plastered the snapshot across their pages. But the photo only heightened the speculation.<\/p>\n

Online sleuths soon spotted<\/a> clear signs of manipulation. One of Kate\u2019s hands, they noticed, was peculiarly blurred. Her daughter\u2019s jumper was missing a portion of the cuff. Her son\u2019s fingers had an unnatural position.<\/p>\n

News agencies including Reuters, Associated Press, and AFP quickly reviewed the evidence. They withdrew the photos from circulation the same day.<\/p>\n

The Royal family was next to act. A statement ostensibly from Kate apologised for \u201cany confusion\u201d and <\/span>admitted to editing the pic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet these responses only encouraged the conspiracy theorists. They speculated that Kate had died or \u2014 even worse \u2014<\/span> abdicated.<\/p>\n

All the uproar has sharpened the sense of chaos surrounding the monarchy. It\u2019s also strengthened the case for image authentication.<\/p>\n

The watermarking guarantee<\/h2>\n

A leading advocate for watermarks is James Davenport, a professor of IT at Bath University and a fellow at the British<\/span> Computer Society (BCS). He wants to stamp unedited photos as \u201cguaranteed originals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Watermarking digital images as untouched, Davenport says, would assure media agencies and the public. It could also be far simpler than watermarking AI-generated content \u2014 an approach attracting growing support<\/a>.  <\/span><\/p>\n

The difference, Davenport told TNW, stems from motivation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watermarking AI has problems<\/h2>\n

For photos, cameras and phones would need signature systems to authenticate images. Photographers and rights-holders would then apply the stamps to their pictures. As a result, news organisations could warn their audiences when a picture isn\u2019t rubber-stamped. <\/span><\/p>\n

On a technical level, the approach resembles digital signatures on documents. It <\/span>would rely on mutual trust to succeed, but each party has good reasons to cooperate. If they didn\u2019t, their photos would become less trusted. <\/span><\/p>\n

Watermarking AI<\/a>, by contrast, would require people motivated by deception to always do the right thing. Bad actors won\u2019t sign up and can already evade the stamps<\/a> that others add.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is much talk about \u2018watermarking AI\u2019, but this is probably impractical, and certainly impossible to enforce \u2014 the genie is well and truly out of the bottle,\u201d Davenport said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is really needed is watermarking \u2018guaranteed originals,\u2019 which is certainly technically possible.\u201d<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n
