{"id":14609,"date":"2024-03-15T11:27:23","date_gmt":"2024-03-15T11:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1404839"},"modified":"2024-03-15T11:27:23","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T11:27:23","slug":"uk-fusion-startup-trials-plasma-stabilising-laser-for-holy-grail-of-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=14609","title":{"rendered":"UK fusion startup trials plasma-stabilising laser for \u2018holy grail\u2019 of energy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>British startup Tokamak Energy is testing a new type of laser that it says is \u201ccrucial\u201d to stabilising fusion reactions \u2014 the same atom-fusing process that powers the Sun and promises to deliver virtually limitless, clean energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Oxford-based company is building <\/span><span>ST40, a donut-shaped machine that in 2022 became the first privately-owned fusion reactor to reach 100 million <\/span><span>\u00b0C \u2014 six times as hot as the core of our closest star<\/span><span>. This is generally regarded as the temperature threshold whereby fusion reactions can become self-sustaining.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During fusion, atoms merge together. This produces huge amounts of power in the form of plasma. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cMeasuring plasma density is key to our understanding and control of the fusion fuel and efficient future power plant operations,\u201d said Dr. Tadas Pyragius, a plasma physicist at Tokamak Energy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA laser beam fired through the plasma interacts with the electrons and tells us the density of the fuel, which is essential for sustained fusion conditions and delivering secure and reliable energy to the grid,\u201d he explained.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Like its name suggests, the company is building a tokamak reactor, the most common kind of fusion design, first pioneered in the 1960s. Tokamaks use giant magnets to keep plasma moving in a loop <\/span><span>while running an electrical current through it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tokamak Energy is developing a more compact tokamak design that it says is more efficient, meaning it can operate with lower capital investment, operating costs, and on a smaller scale. Discovered by one of the company\u2019s founders in 1980, t<\/span><span>his design is now the basis for several fusion energy programmes around the world, including the UK government\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-taps-digital-twin-in-bid-for-worlds-first-fusion-power-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production<\/span><\/a><span> (STEP) project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tokamak Energy has ra<\/span><span>ised <\/span><span>\u20ac<\/span><span>230mn to date \u2014 making it Europe\u2019s most well-funded fusion startup. In hot pursuit are Germany\u2019s Marvel Fusion and Focused Energy, which have raised \u20ac110mn and \u20ac75mn, respectively. And then the<\/span><span>re\u2019s the UK\u2019s First Light Fusion, which has bagged \u20ac90mn to develop its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-fusion-startup-breaks-pressure-record-giant-gun-z-machine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>giant \u2018gun\u2019 fusion machine<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company is currently working on upgrading and testing its pilot machine <\/span><span>at its <\/span><span>Oxford headquarters<\/span><span>, with plans to develop its first commercial plant \u201cin the 2030s\u201d.
