Europe\u2019s linguistic diversity has received a boost into the AI<\/a> era with the launch of new LLMs for Nordic languages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fittingly named Viking, the model family is the brainchild of Finnish startup Silo AI<\/a>. The company claims to host Europe\u2019s largest private AI lab and has pledged to protect the continent\u2019s digital sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Viking is the latest step of that mission. By integrating Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish into its open-source<\/a> models, Silo AI plans to expand digital inclusivity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peter Sarlin, the startup\u2019s CEO and co-founder, wants the LLMs to \u201cbridge gaps\u201d in digital communication.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe aim to cater to the nuances of these low-resource languages and ensure that LLMs reflect the values and culture of the Nordic people using them,\u201d Sarlin told TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n

All five Viking languages are low-resource, meaning they lack the linguistic data needed to train high-performing LLMs. That threatens their future in the digital world \u2014 and the physical world too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without LLMs in these languages, communities could be deprived of countless services, from machine translation to personalised healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n

Businesses would also lose access to potential markets. And as AI spreads deeper into our lives, linguistic diversity and cultural heritage could disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Silo AI\u2019s solution to this problem focuses on Europe<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nordic languages and Europe\u2019s digital sovereignty<\/h2>\n

Before launching Viking, Silo AI earned plaudits for Poro<\/a>, an open model for English, Finnish, and programming languages. <\/span><\/p>\n

Viking expands the repertoire. The new suite of models was built to master the low-resource Nordic languages, without compromising the high-resource English language. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to the startup\u2019s evaluations, <\/span>Viking offers \u201cunparalleled proficiency\u201d in Nordic languages. <\/span><\/p>\n

Additional tests suggest the family\u2019s English performance is on par with other open models, such as Mistral<\/a> and Meta\u2019s Llama. <\/span>Viking also reputedly \u201cexcels\u201d in processing multiple languages and coding.<\/span><\/p>\n

These capabilities enable \u201calmost endless\u201d applications, Sarlin said, from content creation and translation to research and programming support. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another target for the models is public sector services, such as education and healthcare. In these use cases, linguistic accuracy and cultural sensitivity are crucial.<\/p>\n

Poro and Viking can expand the benefits of these services to low-resource language speakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe enable European stakeholders to have sovereignty over how downstream applications and value creation occur,\u201d Sarlin said.<\/p>\n

In the fiercely competitive AI world, Viking could also bolster Europe\u2019s business landscape.<\/p>\n

Silo AI plans to build on these ambitions by expanding its model family. Before this year ends, the startup plans to integrate every official EU language.<\/span><\/p>\n
