{"id":14747,"date":"2024-04-09T07:00:42","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T07:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1405514"},"modified":"2024-04-09T07:00:42","modified_gmt":"2024-04-09T07:00:42","slug":"finnish-startup-basemark-secures-e22m-to-make-driving-safer-with-ar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=14747","title":{"rendered":"Finnish startup Basemark secures \u20ac22M to make driving safer with AR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Helsinki-headquartered Basemark has raised \u20ac22mn to bring its <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/augmented-reality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">augmented reality<\/a> (AR) \u201ctoolkit\u201d to automakers across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Basemark\u2019s software, dubbed Rocksolid AR, is an AI-based<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/computer-vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> computer vision<\/a> system<\/span><span> that enables carmakers to develop their own AR applications for Heads-up Displays (HUDs).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Car companies are embracing AR HUDs as a means of relaying important information to the driver. Instead of having to look down at a screen, HUDs project real-time driving guidance, alerts, and other information onto the windshield.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cars<\/a> on the road already use this technology, but it is getting more and more advanced each year. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Unlike most companies in the space, which develop their own AR software to sell to manufacturers, Rocksolid AR is a kind of toolkit that helps carmakers develop their own AR technologies, tailoring them to their specific needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOEMs (<\/span><span>original equipment manufacturers)<\/span><span> want to become software developers themselves because of the software-defined car megatrend,\u201d explained Tero Sarkkinen, founder and CEO of Basemark.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHowever, AR development is very slow, expensive, and tedious to learn, requiring expertise in AI, computer vision, graphics, and embedded systems \u2014 that\u2019s why we developed Rocksolid AR,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rocksolid AR includes advanced localisation and motion tracking mechanisms to ensure AR content is always \u201canchored\u201d correctly to real-world objects, regardless of motion or vibration. It also uses algorithms to combat latency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Software-defined vehicles<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>Last year, BMW unveiled two concept cars \u2014 Dee and Vision Neue Klasse \u2014 that both feature AR HUDs. The German carmaker didn\u2019t mention which company it would use to power the screens. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/transportation\/basemark-creates-ar-experience-for-bmw-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>BMW previously partnered with Basemark<\/span><\/a> <span>to bring the tech into its iX models.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The adoption of AR HUDs comes as the automotive industry pushes into advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other forms of autonomous driving. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2023\/08\/25\/polestar-mobileye-adas-tech-hands-free-eyes-off-driving-4-ev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Polestar<\/span><\/a><span>, for instance, last year announced the inclusion of \u201chands-free, eyes-off driving\u201d tech in its Polestar 4 SUV.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAugmented reality serves as an integral component of the Software Defined Vehicle megatrend that is guiding the automotive industry toward full autonomy,\u201d Remy de Tonnac, senior partner at ETF Partners, one of Basemark\u2019s new investors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Basemark will use the fresh capital to deepen its business with carmakers in Europe and the US and fund its international expansion to Japan, China, and South Korea.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company secured its first series production deal with an OEM in the US last year. Existing customers include \u201cwell-known\u201d OEMs and Tier-1 companies from Germany, France, Italy, and UK \u2014 but it\u2019s not naming names.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This latest funding round brings Basemark total raised to \u20ac34mn since it was founded in Helsinki in 2015.
