Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The idea is to turn satellites into intelligent, interconnected platforms that don\u2019t just relay information from <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space<\/a> to Earth, but also from space to space. This would enable satellites to network, communicate with each other and make the delivery of&nbsp; space-related data more efficient, said the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Internet-of-things in space<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>ReOrbit is building two core products, \u201cMuon\u201d and \u201cGluon.\u201d The former is a flight software stack that acts like an operating system for the satellite. It can be added into any existing satellite body.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gluon on the other hand is an actual satellite platform equipped with optical communications terminals (OCTs) for space-space and space-ground links.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Muon includes a full digital twin of the Gluon platform, which aims to give customers insight into capital requirements at a mission\u2019s early stages. This virtual replica can also be used to train operators and plan flight procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI strongly believe that initiatives like ReOrbit\u2019s Ukko \u2014 that leverage highly advanced flight software and, hence, transform the future of technology in space \u2014 open a host of opportunities in space applications, particularly in the Earth Observation domain,\u201d said Daniele Romagnoli, commercial EO system engineer at ESA and InCubed officer of the UKKO programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ReOrbit has already secured its first customer for the tech being developed under the UKKO programme. Contingent on the success of next year\u2019s demonstrator, India-based KaleidEO plans to combine ReOrbit\u2019s software with its AI models. The firm\u2019s ultimate goal is to make E<\/span><span>arth observation data and insights more accessible.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Founded in 2019, ReOrbit raised $7.4mn last year in an oversubscribed seed funding round. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/europe-surpasses-us-in-private-spacetech-investment-for-first-time-seraphim-space-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Investor interest in space tech<\/span><\/a><span> has piqued in recent years, as an industry once solely led by governments increasingly becomes dominated by private companies competing to come to market.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alongside ReOrbit\u2019s software-defined satellites, startups are building everything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/german-rocket-startup-bags-e30m-as-it-eyes-takeoff-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>rockets<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-startup-breakthrough-space-based-solar-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>space-based solar plants<\/span><\/a><span> to moon rovers. &nbsp; &nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/finnish-startup-reorbit-launch-software-defined-satellite-esa\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Helsinki-based startup ReOrbit is preparing for the first demonstration of its \u201csoftware-enabled\u201d satellite.
