The new venture promised to bring the \u201cworld\u2019s kindest burger\u201d to supermarket shelves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Today, Mosa Meat announced it has secured another \u20ac40mn \u2014 just two months after closing a <\/span><span>$85mn Series B funding round<\/span><span>. Lowercarbon Capital and M Ventures led the round, alongside existing investors including actor Leonardo DiCaprio.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The freshing funding comes as US politicians wage a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/afb4be5d-e363-4ef7-b509-2a4c909144ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>culture war<\/span><\/a><span> against cultivated meat. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>In a bid to win over conservative voters, last year Italy also banned<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cdf1015f-ed60-419d-a3a0-819673a0f58f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span> the production<\/span><\/a> <span>of lab-grown meat in a law put forward by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSome governments are more forward thinking than others about addressing the challenges in our food systems,\u201d <\/span><span>Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat,<\/span><span> told TNW.<\/span><span> \u201cThe laggards making policy decisions based on unfounded fears and misinformation will miss the boat.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year, the US became the second country in the world, after Singapore, to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/21\/business\/cultivated-meat-us-approval\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>approve<\/span><\/a><span> the sale of cultivated meat.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe states looking to preemptively ban cultivated meat will only push those economic opportunities beyond their state lines,\u201d said Bosch, who believes the cultivated meat and seafood market will still thrive in the US despite opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Global interest in cultivated meat remains strong, driven by the demand for more ethical, climate-friendly food options. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11367-022-02128-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>study<\/span><\/a><span> found cultivated meat has the potential to cut the climate impact of meat by up to 92%, reduce air pollution by up to 94%, and use up to 90% less land.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year, the <\/span><span>Netherlands became the first country in the European Union to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/danieladelorenzo\/2023\/07\/05\/dutch-government-agrees-on-conditions-for-cultivated-meat-and-seafood-tastings-in-the-netherlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>pre-approve tastings<\/span><\/a><span> of food grown directly from animal cells.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mosa Meat recently opened a new factory in Maastricht, as it looks to ramp up production. The company is set to hold the first tastings of its cultivated burgers in the Netherlands this May, it told TNW. <\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company\u2019s latest funding round comes amid one of history\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/2023-europe-most-depressed-year-vc-exit-value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>biggest downturns<\/span><\/a><span> in VC activity, which has hit cultivated meat startups particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agfundernews.com\/preliminary-agfunder-data-point-to-78-decline-in-cultivated-meat-funding-in-2023-investors-blame-general-risk-aversion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>hard<\/span><\/a><span> and forced the sector to consolidate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe overall macroeconomic landscape has been rough in the last two years, which has culled the herd of companies and forced us to be even more strategic and focused on achieving our mission,\u201d said Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although interest in cultivated meat in Europe is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=interest+in+cultivated+meat+in+Europe+is+high&amp;oq=interest+in+cultivated+meat+in+Europe+is+high&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQRRhAMgYIAhBFGEAyBggDEEUYQNIBBzQzNmowajeoAgCwAgA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>high<\/span><\/a><span>, it will likely take at least a few years before it hits the supermarket shelves, says the Good Food Institute, a non-profit that promotes animal protein alternatives.
