Secure your 2for1 tickets before 23 April.<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Britain\u2019s response, Dowden continued, could lead to tighter export controls and restrictions on overseas investments.<\/p>\n<p>He highlighted the risks of rival states accessing tech developed in UK universities. The Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/73e5ef6f-0e67-449f-a520-1f2df20276be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported last month<\/a> that British academics have worked with researchers linked to Beijing\u2019s armed forces on tech projects with potential military uses. China called the accusations \u201cbaseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be proud that much of the cutting-edge development in sensitive technologies is happening at our universities,\u201d Dowden said. \u201cBut this also has the potential to become a chink in our armoury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside China, Dowden named Iran, Russia, and North Korea as countries that he considers threats.<\/p>\n<h2>The \u201csensitive technologies\u201d under review<\/h2>\n<p>Dowden\u2019s speech comes<span> a month after the UK joined the US in sanctioning hackers allegedly backed by the Chinese government. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>British officials accused Beijing of orchestrating cyber attacks on the UK\u2019s elections watchdog and parliamentarians. China said the claims were \u201ccompletely unfounded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/cryptocurrency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cybersecurity<\/a> is one of several areas of tech that\u2019s causing friction. <span>Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has already been banned from Britain\u2019s 5G mobile network over surveillance concerns. The UK has also restricted sales of quantum computers with potential military applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>The new review may add further curbs on semiconductors and AI. Lawmakers had also <\/span><span>considered listing genomics as critical infrastructure, Dowden said, but decided that the current rules were sufficient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Genomics had attracted growing attention following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/interactive\/2023\/china-dna-sequencing-bgi-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a><span> that China\u2019s BGI group had <span>worked with the country\u2019s military to harvest genetic data.<\/span> <\/span><span>US officials <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/health-china-bgi-dna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span> the materials could lead to genetically enhanced soldiers and biological weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/uk-sensitive-tech-china-cyberespionage\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain is exploring new curbs on exporting and funding \u201csensitive technologies\u201d amid growing tensions with China.
