What\u2019s more, the Netherlands is showing a particularly strong comeback. Amsterdam funding rose a highly encouraging 107%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Overall, European VC investment reached $13.7bn in Q1 2024, an increase fuelled to a great extent by the energy transition. Energy was the biggest sector for tech <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">startup<\/a> and scaleup investment for the fourth quarter in a row, having raised $3.1bn in the first three months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The top five energy deals of the period were:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/span>Electra \u2014 $330mn, Paris<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/swedish-startup-h2-green-steel-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H2 Green Steel<\/a> \u2014 $325mn, Stockholm<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/span>Deep Green \u2014 $253mn, London<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/span>Sunfire \u2014 $233mn, Dresden<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/span>ENVIRIA \u2014 $200mn, Frankfurt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Deep tech and climate tech companies raised 27% and 26% of the total funding in the first quarter. This was driven in large part by substantial raises by <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/dutch-online-supermarket-picnic-new-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grocery delivery service Picnic<\/a> and recently-turned-unicorn <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/amsterdam-based-mews-netherlands-newest-unicorn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hotel management platform Mews<\/a>, as well as mobility financing company Moove and intelligent audit platform DataSnipper.<\/p>\n<p>This puts the Netherlands in fourth spot in terms of money raised in Q1 $1.3bn. Unsurprisingly, the UK tops the chart with $3.9bn. London accounted for $2.4bn of this, however, this figure was down 18% from last year.
