Invented in the 1970s, Pekilo was the world\u2019s first commercial mycoprotein \u2014 a food source derived from natural fungus.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With a low carbon footprint and minimal land requirements, Pekilo promises a sustainable substitute for meat protein. Standing over 12 metres tall and 4.5 meters in diameter, the vat will circulate nutrients to cultivate the Pekilo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Enifer will then heat-treat and harvest the biomass with centrifuges. \u201cAt this point, the mycoprotein looks a little bit like tofu,\u201d Simo Ellil\u00e4, the company\u2019s CEO and <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/founders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-founder<\/a>, told TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, the fungus will be dried with hot air and milled into a powder. Enifer\u2019s new cash injection brings these prospects closer to reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The pot combines a \u20ac15mn Series B round led by the private equity fund Taaleri Bioindustry I with \u20ac9mn in loans for climate friendly-tech from Finnish state-owned financing companies. It follows a \u20ac12mn grant from Business Finland <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enifer.com\/enifer-secures-e12-million-grant-to-build-a-first-of-its-kind-mycoprotein-ingredient-factory-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>announced in January<\/span><\/a><span>. The total package of \u20ac36mn exceeds the factory\u2019s construction costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Development of the facility is already underway.
