Swedish VC firm Creandum \u2014 an early backer of Spotify<\/a> and Klarna \u2014 has raised \u20ac500mn to fund budding European tech startups<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fund comes at a potentially watershed moment for tech investment in Europe. After a two-year capital <\/span>dry spell<\/span><\/a> in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector is showing signs of a comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel very bullish about the prospects for Europe,\u201d <\/span>Creandum said in a <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a>. \u201c<\/span>In the last quarter, we saw upticks both in funding and valuations largely driven by AI and SaaS.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Creandum\u2019s fundraising follows a number of other big deals made this year. In March, deep tech investor <\/span>Plural Platform<\/span><\/a> launched a \u20ac400mn fund, while German VC <\/span>World Fund<\/span><\/a> raised \u20ac300mn to back climate tech startups. In May, <\/span>Belgian venture capital firm <\/span>Imec.xpand raised \u20ac300mn<\/span><\/a> to invest in startups working in semiconductors and electronics. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are moving beyond the recovery phase and back into a period of growth,\u201d Tom Wehmeier, partner at London-based VC Atomico, told the <\/span>Financial Times<\/span><\/a>.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Some of this year\u2019s biggest deals include $300mn for German machine translation unicorn <\/span>DeepL<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>\u00a3800mn<\/span> for <\/span>British fintech startup<\/span><\/a> Abound, and a whopping $1bn for London-based autonomous driving tech startup <\/span>Wayve<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Half of the capital raised for Creandum\u2019s most recent fund came from US investors. Creandum\u2019s investor base includes five of the eight largest US university endowments, as well as pension funds and foundations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a renewed appetite from US investors <\/span>for exposure to European tech,\u201d said Creandum. <\/span><\/p>\n

The VC firm  recently backed French AI startup H in a<\/span> $220mn seed round<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>German SaaS company Codesphere <\/span>in <\/span>a $18mn Series A, and a $16mn Series A round for Spanish fintech Embat. <\/span><\/p>\n
