{"id":15069,"date":"2024-06-03T15:14:20","date_gmt":"2024-06-03T15:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1407202"},"modified":"2024-06-03T15:14:20","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T15:14:20","slug":"dutch-startup-biobx-bags-e80m-to-turn-plastic-waste-into-hydrocarbons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=15069","title":{"rendered":"Dutch startup BioBX bags \u20ac80M to turn plastic waste into hydrocarbons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>A Dutch <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">startup<\/a> has devised a way to convert mountains of plastic waste into chemicals essential for the production of a wide range of goods, from bottles to batteries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>BioBTX has patented the process \u2014 known as <\/span><span>Integrated Cascading Catalytic Pyrolysis \u2014 <\/span><span>and just secured \u20ac80mn to scale it up.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Armed with the fresh funds, the company will build a factory in Groningen capable of converting 20,000 tonnes of plastic waste a year into chemicals like benzene, <\/span><span>toluene, and xylene<\/span><span>. Scientists refer to these hydrocarbons as aromatic compounds due to their unique smell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Aromatics form the building blocks of the chemicalindustry. By turning plastic waste into a resource, BioBTX wants to reduce the amount of oil that needs to be pumped out of the ground, slashing emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The chemicals manufacturer has been operating a demonstration facility at the PETRA Circular Chemicals Plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, since April 2022. Last year, it <\/span><span>partnered with Norwegian recycling company Agilyx<\/span><span> to explore the possibility of opening a much bigger factory, which is now under development.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>BioBTX is tapping a huge market. Global demand for benzene alone was valued at <\/span><span>$46bn in 2023, and is expected to almost double by 2031.<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Perhaps that\u2019s how the startup managed to secure such a sizeable investment, despite the currently challenging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/european-vc-deals-continue-to-sink-economic-downturn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>funding environment<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis funding is a crucial step in creating a sustainable pathway for the chemical industry \u2014 and we are excited to take the lead from Groningen,\u201d said Ton Vries, CEO of BioBTX.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u20ac80mn investment round includes backing from Invest-NL, private equity investor Infinity Recycling, and German chemical firm Covestro.
