Historic rocket launches Europe back into space"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/tnw-blurple?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2024%2F06%2FUntitled-design-1-1.jpg&amp;signature=7da8c6dade125cb05a0becbb747c2474\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Finally, Europe has regained independent access to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The continent reestablished <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ariane-6-restore-independent-european-access-space-what-that-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a sovereign launch capacity<\/a> on Tuesday with the maiden flight of the Ariane 6 rocket.<\/p>\n<p>Built to take satellites into orbit, Ariane 6 lifted off from the European Spaceport in French Guiana at 16:00 local time (21:00 CEST).<\/p>\n<p>The rocket is now soaring into the cosmos with&nbsp;a payload of satellites and experiments. Once the cargo is dropped off, Ariane 6\u2019s upper stage will burn up to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/clearspace1-launch-contract-first-ever-space-debris-removal-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce space trash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>The demonstration mission aims to prove the launcher\u2019s capabilities. Registration now!<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since the retirement of Ariane 5 last July, Europe has relied on Elon Musk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/spacex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a> to send satellites into orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Thierry Breton, the EU\u2019s commissioner for the internal market, described the problem as an \u201cunprecedented crisis.\u201d With the arrival of Ariane 6, that crisis is finally over.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, doubts about the rocket persist.<\/p>\n<h2>Ariane 6\u2019s future<\/h2>\n<p><span>With a whopping \u20ac4bn price tag and a four-year delay, the development of Ariane 6 has sparked controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Critics have also questioned the launcher\u2019s expendable build. Among them is Musk, whose SpaceX rockets cuts costs and turnaround times by reusing their boosters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Musk has advised competitors to follow a similar path.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey need to go all-in on reusability or be utterly uncompetitive,\u201d he said <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1683865021191794688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1683865021191794688%7Ctwgr%5E86d236ef23e9b2b6ce5103524921204bde4c08d1%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2024-07-09%2Feurope-s-ariane-6-set-to-fly-as-spacex-s-rockets-dominate-launch-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">last July<\/a>. <\/span>\u201cRockets are no different from other transport technologies, just harder to make reusable. No one would buy a single-use airplane, car or even bicycle! You\u2019d need to tow another car just for the return trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, ESA argued that a reusable design would be too expensive. \u201cOur launch needs are so low that it wouldn\u2019t make sense economically,\u201d Toni Tolker-Nielsen, the agency\u2019s director of space transportation, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/europe-aims-to-end-space-access-crisis-with-ariane-6s-inaugural-launch\/#:~:text=We%20made%20the%20choice%20of,need%20it%20at%20this%20point.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told SpaceNews<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>Following the inaugural flight, ESA can at least celebrate renewed access to space.
