In 2022, it received a \u20ac1.1bn investment from the Dutch government to boost the country\u2019s position in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Photonic chips use light instead of electricity to carry and transmit information. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thanks to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synopsys.com\/glossary\/what-is-a-photonic-integrated-circuit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">technical advantages<\/a>, they can not only accelerate <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI<\/a> development, but are also particularly suitable for technologies such as sensors, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/quantum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quantum<\/a> computing, and telecoms.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands has emerged as a leading player in photonic chip research and development. According to PhotonDelta, the Dutch industry has raised over $500mn in the past five years. The country is particularly strong in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photondelta.com\/news\/what-is-indium-phosphide-and-what-can-it-do-more-than-other-pic-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Indium Phosphide<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imec-int.com\/en\/what-we-offer\/development\/silicon-nitride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Silicon Nitride<\/a> photonic chips.<\/p>\n<p>With the new Silicon Valley base, PhotonDelta aims to combine the Netherlands\u2019 strengths with US expertise in silicon photonics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we stimulate the internationalisation of our value chain, we need to connect our know-how, expertise, networks, and funding in North America and the Netherlands,\u201d said Jorn Smeets, Managing Director North America at PhotonDelta.<\/p>\n<p>Collaborating on the development of photonic chips holds significant promise for both the Dutch and the US semiconductor industry.
