Shortly into the trip, however, the vessel suffered a failure in its cooling pump and had to dock in Belgium for repairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After a bit of tinkering, the issue was resolved and the crew set sail once more. They arrived at Ramsgate, UK, 12 hours later. Registration now!<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The eight-metre-long vessel is powered by a fuel cell that sucks <\/span><span>hydrogen from three storage cylinders and converts it into energy. For over a decade the university championed the development of solar-powered boats, making the switch to hydrogen four years ago.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hydrogen power&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>The Hydro Motion project aims to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source for ships, which are one of the hardest forms of transport to decarbonise. The global shipping industry contributes 3% of global carbon emissions \u2014 more than air travel.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hydrogen is the \u201cbest way to store green energy,\u201d said the Hydro Motion team on their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hydromotionteam.nl\/project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201c<\/span><span>When converted by fuel cells it has an energy storage density approximately 235 times larger compared to industry standard lithium-ion battery cells.\u201d<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hydrogen boats have been making significant headway in recent years. In 2021, Norway launched <\/span><i><span>MF Hydra<\/span><\/i><span>, the world\u2019s first hydrogen-powered ferry. The country recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.h2-view.com\/story\/construction-begins-in-norway-on-two-hydrogen-powered-ferries\/2108949.article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>started building<\/span><\/a><span> two more of the vessels.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, most hydro boats today are much like TU Delft\u2019s \u2014 experimental prototypes not designed for commercial use.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The main problem with bringing them to the market is cost and infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hydrogen, especially the green variety, made using renewable energy, is not available in large quantities today.
