The startup, SuperSharp, wants to occupy the space in the middle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SuperSharp credits these capabilities to its unfolding \u201cself-alignment technology\u201d which allows it to fit big telescopes in small satellites. <\/span><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfolding telescopes are nothing new \u2014 just look at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RzGLKQ7_KZQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>James Webb<\/span><\/a><span> for inspiration \u2014 but they\u2019re generally very expensive and notoriously tricky to pull off. According to SuperSharp, the telescope can even identify heat loss at the level of an individual home.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Local authorities could use this data to understand which properties require proper insulation while homeowners could use it to reduce their electricity consumption. The startup says this could make it the \u201ckiller app\u201d for thermal satellite imagery.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>SuperSharp recently secured <\/span><span>\u00a35mn from the UK Space Agency to develop its first in-orbit demonstrator, scheduled to launch in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Harshbir Sangha, missions and capabilities delivery director at the UK Space Agency, said SuperSharp\u2019s thermal imaging technology could help provide a \u201cclearer picture of heat patterns in cities\u201d and is a \u201cbrilliant example\u201d of how investment in space can improve life on Earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The funding forms part of a \u00a333mn funding package for over 20 new space projects, announced yesterday by the UK Space Agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Eight major projects, including SuperSharp\u2019s, will receive a share of \u00a324mn. This will support projects such as HyImpulse\u2019s suborbital rocket test from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/how-to-build-saxavord-spaceport-spacetech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>SaxaVord spaceport<\/span><\/a><span> in Shetland and Rolls Royce\u2019s development of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/rolls-royce-nuclear-reactor-the-moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>micro reactors<\/span><\/a><span> to power life on the Moon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The remaining \u00a39mn will fund 15 \u201cKick Starter\u201d projects, supporting early-stage space technologies from in-orbit servicing to advanced materials development.
