Popular <\/span>LGBTQ+<\/span> dating app Grindr<\/a> has disabled location-based features for users within the Olympic village of the Paris Games, which kicked off today. <\/span><\/p>\n

The measures are not designed to stop athletes hooking up between sprints, swims, or shot puts \u2014 they\u2019re a safety precaution. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf an athlete is not out or comes from a country where being LGBTQ+ is dangerous or illegal, using Grindr can put them at risk of being outed by curious individuals who may try to identify and expose them on the app,\u201d said Grindr.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grindr has disabled features like \u201cRoam\u201d or \u201cExplore,\u201d which allow users to search for and view profiles in a specific location. The \u201cshow distance\u201d feature will also be turned off by default, but users can share their approximate distance if they decide to turn it on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grindr has also rolled out a number of other \u201ctargeted safety measures.\u201d  These include deactivating screenshots for profile images and chats, and disabling the sending of private videos.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Users within the Olympic village will also be able to send unlimited disappearing messages and unsend messages after they\u2019re sent. This is usually a premium feature. <\/span><\/p>\n

A recurring issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Grindr said that the measures, which were also rolled-out during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, ensure <\/span>LGBTQ+ athletes can \u201cconnect with each other authentically\u201d without worrying about \u201cprying eyes or unwanted attention.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Gri<\/span>ndr\u2019s ramped up privacy measures stem from the 2016 Rio Olympics, after straight <\/span>Daily Beast reporter Nico Hines used the app<\/span><\/a> to out LGBTQ+ athletes at the Olympic village. The publisher later removed <\/span>Hines\u2019 article, but the original version provided potentially identifying information about some of the athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n

In another case, TikTok users at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics posted videos with the names and pictures of Olympians\u2019 Grindr profiles, Business Insider<\/a> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a criminal offence to engage in same-sex sexual activity in 63 jurisdictions, <\/span>according to the Human Dignity Trust.<\/span> In some countries, it is a crime punishable by death. <\/span><\/p>\n
