The European Union\u2019s AI Act entered into force yesterday. It is the world\u2019s first comprehensive regulation for artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

First agreed upon in December 2023<\/a>, the law is applying a risk-based approach. The strictest measures<\/a> only apply to \u201chigh-risk\u201d systems, including tools related to employment and law enforcement. The regulation entirely prohibits AI systems deemed \u201cunacceptable,\u201d such a social scoring or police profiling.<\/p>\n

For \u201cminimal-risk\u201d AI, such as spam filters, there are no additional requirements. For \u201climited-risk\u201d systems like chatbots, companies need to inform users that they\u2019re interacting with AI.<\/p>\n

The Act also introduces a special set of rules for general-purpose AI<\/a>, which includes foundation models such as the ones powering ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe European approach to technology puts people first and ensures that everyone\u2019s rights are preserved,\u201d EU<\/a> competition chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The majority of the Act\u2019s provisions will apply from August 2026. The ban of AI systems that pose \u201cunacceptable risks\u201d will apply in six months, while the rules for general-purpose AI will take effect in one year.<\/p>\n

All companies that provide services or products in the bloc fall under the law\u2019s scope. Failure to comply can trigger fines of up to 7% of a company\u2019s annual global turnover.<\/p>\n

Eyes on the EU<\/h2>\n

Since its inception, the AI Act has sparked controversy. A number of European businesses have raised objections<\/a>, fearing that the rules could harm competition and impede innovation.<\/p>\n

For others, it represents a major step toward responsible AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Act\u2019s risk-based approach is designed to ensure AI technologies are developed and used responsibly, providing a framework that balances innovation with the protection of citizens\u2019 rights,\u201d said Maria Koskinen, AI Policy Manager at AI governance startup Saidot.<\/p>\n

No matter the view, the time is now for companies to plan their compliance path.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the time for organisations to map their AI projects, classify their AI systems, and risk assess their use-cases,\u201d said Enza Iannopollo, principal analyst at tech advisory firm Forrester.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey also need to execute a compliance roadmap that is specific to the amount and combination of use-cases they have.\u201d<\/p>\n

While we have yet to see the Act\u2019s effect on business operations and competitiveness<\/span>, the law has made the EU a global leader in setting policy benchmarks for the tech.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are witnessing the dawn of a new era of AI governance,\u201d Koskinen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world is closely watching how the EU will enforce these regulations, and the impact it will have on global AI practices cannot be overstated.\u201d<\/p>\n
