A month later, the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-ban-tiktok-lite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened an official probe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission demanded that <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/tiktok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a> provide an immediate risk assessment, which it had failed to do prior to the launch \u2014 as required by the DSA. The regulators were concerned that the feature\u2019s addictive effects could negatively impact the physical and mental health of users, especially in the case of minors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe available brain time of young Europeans is not a currency for social media \u2014 and it never will be,\u201d EU Commissioner Thierry Breton said in a statement today.<\/p>\n<p>Next to killing Lite Rewards, TikTok has also committed to not launch any other similar programme that would circumvent the withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said that it will closely monitor the company\u2019s compliance. Potential violations can lead to fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.<\/p>\n<h2>More probes as part of the DSA<\/h2>\n<p>While this marks the first case the EU has closed under the scope of the DSA, another one against (yes) TikTok is still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Since February, the Commission has been investigating the company\u2019s measures on transparency and safety as well as the app\u2019s recommendation algorithm which may lead to addiction and rabbit hole effects.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has also opened formal proceedings against <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/x-investigation-suspected-breaches-eu-content-rules-dsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a>, Meta, and AliExpress.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/tiktok-kills-lite-rewards-eu\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TikTok will permanently withdraw its controversial Lite Rewards programme in the EU to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) \u2014 a sweeping content moderation rulebook for online platforms.
