In March, a plane transporting UK defence minister Grant Shapps to Poland had its GPS <\/span>signal jammed<\/span><\/a> as it flew near Russian territory. <\/span><\/p>\n

While the disruption forced the plane to use alternative ways to navigate for over half an hour, the British aircraft was most likely not the intended target. Russia regularly jams satellite signals to disrupt enemy equipment \u2014 from drones to tanks. These attacks often spill over to other GPS users in the area, including <\/span>commercial aircraft<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The UK government is responding to this <\/span>rising threat<\/span><\/a> by building a massive anti-jamming facility in Wiltshire, it announced today. The \u201csilent hangar\u201d will create an echo-free environment to test how well Britain\u2019s military equipment stands up against GPS jamming.  <\/span><\/p>\n

GPS jammers work by emitting radio waves at the same frequency as GPS signals, preventing geolocated devices \u2014 from drones to tanks \u2014 from accurately determining their location. It\u2019s a tactic used against all manner of military equipment on battlegrounds across the world. <\/span><\/p>\n

Maria Eagle, minister for defence procurement and industry, said the test facility would \u201ckeep our armed forces better protected\u201d amid the \u201c<\/span>increasingly common hostile threat\u201d of GPS jamming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Set to open in 2026, the facility will be one of Europe\u2019s largest anechoic chambers \u2014 large enough to test some of the military\u2019s largest assets, including Chinook helicopters, Protector drones, fighter jets, and armoured vehicles. <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/h4>\n

An anechoic chamber is a specially designed room \u2014 or in this case an aircraft hangar \u2014 that is completely echo-free. These spaces are the most silent places on Earth.  <\/span><\/h4>\n

The silent hangar creates the perfect environment to simulate GPS jamming without <\/span>disrupting GPS signals on the outside, such as the emergency services and air traffic control. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The government has awarded British defence contractor QinetiQ \u00a320mn (\u20ac23mn) to build the hangar. <\/span><\/p>\n

In July, new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ordered a review of the country\u2019s armed forces, which would see the UK <\/span>increase defence spending<\/span><\/a> to 2.5% of its GDP.<\/span><\/p>\n
