Reports<\/a> that the Netherlands plans to implement (under US pressure) new export restrictions of ASML equipment to China are increasing.<\/p>\n

In the name of national security, the US chip war<\/a> against China has been escalating since 2022, when Washington took the first decisive steps to curb the Asian country\u2019s semiconductor ambitions.<\/p>\n

Part of the US strategy has been applying pressure to ally countries such as the Netherlands \u2014 home to ASML. The Dutch tech<\/a> company is the sole manufacturer of the world\u2019s most advanced chipmaking machines.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands has curbed exports of ASML\u2019s most sophisticated machines for high-end chips since 2019. In alignment with Washington, it has also implemented several other export restrictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since April, the Dutch government has been resisting a new set of US-requested curbs<\/a>, seeking to block the servicing and maintenance of ASML\u2019s already sold equipment to Chinese customers.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said<\/a> that the government would take into account ASML\u2019s \u201ceconomic interests\u201d before making a decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost probably there will be more pressure for restrictions, but I also think there will be more push-back,\u201d said<\/a> Christophe Fouquet, ASML\u2019s CEO, speaking at a Citi conference in New York yesterday.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo make the case that this is about national security is getting harder and harder,\u201d Fouquet added. Instead, the US\u2019 continuous push for further restrictions has become more \u201ceconomically motivated\u201d over time.<\/p>\n

Retaliation<\/h2>\n

For its part, China is threatening to cut ties with ASML altogether if tensions continue, Chinese state-run newspaper Global Times reported<\/a> on Sunday. The paper is considered<\/a> a mouthpiece for the Chinese government.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Netherlands follows this strategy, it will exacerbate the widening rift in China-US and China-Netherlands relations,\u201d Global Times said in an editorial.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf ASML loses the Chinese market, it will suffer significant economic losses.\u201d This could lead to a reduction of the company\u2019s global market share and \u201ca shift in the balance of power in the semiconductor industry,\u201d the article continued.<\/p>\n

The blow could be heavy indeed. So far this year, China has been ASML\u2019s biggest market<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Beijing has already taken retaliatory measures against US-based chipmakers, phasing out<\/a> the use of Intel and AMD chips in government computers and servers.<\/p>\n
