Once operational \u2014 scheduled for 2026 \u2014 the plant is slated to recycle 30,000 tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV<\/a> batteries a year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For context, the average <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0e77d4d9-0791-4bb4-b8b1-0564a13ad1ec\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.thenextweb.com\/tnw\/entity\/battery\">EV <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a><\/span> weighs about 500kg so Cylib\u2019s plant will be able to process around 60,000 EV batteries per annum. This is far more than Europe\u2019s current largest such facility, Hydrovolt in Norway \u2014 a joint venture between Northvolt and Norwegian renewable energy firm Hydro \u2014 which has a capacity of 12,000 tons per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Founded in 2022, Cylib has developed an end-to-end battery recycling process that recovers all the critical raw materials from EV and micromobility batteries. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Batteries entering Cylib\u2019s new plant will be discharged, dismantled, and then put through three treatments \u2014 mechanical, thermal, and water-based \u2014 to separate all the key materials from one another. This differs from competitors, most of which only extract a few key elements from old batteries. By processing all of them, Cylib can also sell all of them.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company\u2019s founders \u2014 Dr Lilian Schwich, Paul Sabarny, and Dr Gideon Schwich \u2014 launched Cylib after a decade of battery recycling research at RWTH Aachen. The partners claim their battery recycling method uses 30% less energy than competitors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Securing the supply chain for EV batteries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Cylib\u2019s pitch has clearly been strong enough to reel in some big investors, including the likes of Porsche, Bosch Ventures, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/german-climate-tech-vc-raises-record-breaking-e300m-first-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>World Fund<\/span><\/a><span>. In May, the company raised a \u20ac55mn Series A funding round that it will use to build out its new factory and grow its team of 70 employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In total, Cybil and its backers are investing more than \u20ac180mn into the facility, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/09\/porsche-backed-cylib-breaks-ground-on-huge-ev-battery-recycling-plant.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>CNBC<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Porsche\u2019s investment hints, Cylib is targeting EV-makers as its key customer base. The company\u2019s plant could provide automotive manufacturers in Europe with a local source of key metals needed to produce new batteries, negating the need to mine new materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Cylib reaching industrial-scale production will be a key driver in building a robust European battery infrastructure,\u201d said Schwich, the company\u2019s CEO<\/span><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As Europe electrifies, battery recycling is becoming an increasingly key priority for policymakers. In May, the EU\u2019s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) entered force. The bill aims to secure a sustainable supply of critical raw materials that isn\u2019t reliant on foreign powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The CRMA includes provisions that grant battery recycling companies easier access to financing, an expedited permitting process, and matchmaking with off-takers.
