A Ukrainian startup forged by war is bringing counter-disinformation to the business world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Osavul was founded in 2022 to fight Russian propaganda. To analyse the threats, the company applied AI<\/a> analytics to the information landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

The startup surveys open-source data from social media, websites, and messaging apps. It then identifies harmful narratives \u2014 and the sources spreading them. <\/span><\/p>\n

The narratives have diverse forms. Osavul has detected <\/span>fake news videos<\/span><\/a> plastered with BBC logos, <\/span>racial slurs<\/span><\/a> hidden by slang, and<\/span> generative AI<\/span><\/a> amplifying Russian propaganda.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s government has frequently sought the startup\u2019s insights. So have NATO and the UK. But Osavul is also seeking private sector clients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Business disinformation <\/b><\/h2>\n

Osavul is currently developing services specifically for businesses, which are increasingly bombarded with false information.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russian politicians have accused Coca-Cola <\/span>of buying organs harvested from Ukrainian orphans. Social media posts have spread <\/span>fake reports<\/span><\/a> of banks restricting withdrawals. Viral TikTok videos have <\/span>claimed<\/span><\/a> Disney World is lobbying to lower the legal drinking age.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such attacks can damage reputations and disrupt operations. They can also cause immense financial losses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Analyst firm Gartner expects the costs to skyrocket. By 2028, the company <\/span>predicts<\/span><\/a> that enterprises will spend over $500bn on fighting misinformation \u2014 cannibalising half their marketing and cybersecurity budgets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Osavul aims to mitigate the risks. \u201cOur goal is to review the narratives, show which of them are dangerous, and then give you all the intelligence to understand what you can do,\u201d Dmytro Bilash, the startup\u2019s co-founder, told TNW. <\/span><\/p>\n

Clients can then develop a response plan. That could mean a counter-messaging campaign, a complaint to social media platforms, or even litigation.<\/span><\/p>\n
