Every week, millions of adults pretend that they\u2019re football managers. I am one of them. We live out our dreams in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), an online game that\u2019s become a global phenomenon. <\/span><\/p>\n

With a budget of 100 million (digital) pounds, we build virtual squads of footballers. If their real-life counterparts play well, we win points. By the end of the season, the team with the most points wins. But what<\/em> exactly do they win? Well, that depends who you ask.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the official answer: over 10 million players compete for the grand prize of \u2014 drum roll, please \u2014  two tickets to a football match. Yet most of us fight for a far greater honour: bragging rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

Win your mini league of friends and bask in the glory of your exalted social status. Finish last and face eternal shame for your pathetic football knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n

The stakes are high. So high, in fact, that some players now employ controversial advisors: data analytics. <\/span><\/p>\n

These means I can no longer trust my rivals. Are they even making their decisions? Who\u2019s the real winner when the teams are guided by AI? What happens to a game that\u2019s managed by machines? <\/span><\/p>\n

Regrettably, I now must ask these questions of myself. <\/span><\/p>\n

A new era for fantasy football?<\/h2>\n

After several seasons of mixed results in FPL, I began searching for analytical support.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, I soon found my saviours. There was Mohamed, aka Ragabolly, an Egyptian based in the US, whose <\/span>performance simulators<\/span><\/a> are the stuff of legend. There was <\/span>Ben Crellin<\/span><\/a>, a Brit who builds spreadsheets to navigate the season. There were even entire companies dedicated to FPL analytics. <\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest of them all is <\/span>Fantasy Football Hub<\/span><\/a>, a startup based in the UK. After launching with a blog focus in 2019, Fantasy Football Hub began experimenting with point projections.<\/span><\/p>\n
