{"id":15684,"date":"2024-09-17T14:59:46","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T14:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1410362"},"modified":"2024-09-17T14:59:46","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T14:59:46","slug":"the-eu-is-getting-its-first-ever-commissioner-for-startups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=15684","title":{"rendered":"The EU is getting its first ever commissioner for startups"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ekaterina Zaharieva has been nominated as the EU\u2019s first ever commissioner for<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/startups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;startups<\/a>, the bloc\u2019s chief Ursula von der Leyen <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_4723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<p>Zaharieva served as Bulgaria\u2019s deputy prime minister for judicial reform and foreign affairs between 2017 and 2021. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Zaharieva\u2019s mission<\/h2>\n<p>Zaharieva\u2019s to-do list begins with developing a strategy for EU startups and scaleups to improve framework conditions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to that, the commissioner will work on a European Innovation Act that aims to streamline regulation and facilitate access to venture capital. She will also help in creating a network of deep tech investors.<\/p>\n<p>Another part of her role will be to expand the European Innovation Council (EIC), the European Research Council (ERC), and the University Alliances initiative. She will also propose a European Research Area Act to enable the free movement of research, scientific knowledge, and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Sector-wise, von der Leyen has asked Zaharieva to focus on technologies that can promote the green and digital transitions as well as biotech, the life sciences, and advanced materials.<\/p>\n<h2>Two more commissioners to shape EU\u2019s tech policies<\/h2>\n<p>Von der Leyen nominated former Finnish minister of education Henna Virkkunen as the executive vice president for <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tech<\/a> sovereignty, security, and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Virkkunen will be responsible for internal and external security, the bloc\u2019s digitalisation strategy, and \u201cfrontier technologies,\u201d ranging from AI to semiconductors and quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p>She will also take over the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-dma-new-take-tech-regulation-will-it-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Markets Act<\/a> (DMA) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-digital-services-act-changes-content-rules-for-big-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Services Act<\/a> (DSA) \u2014 the landmark tech laws introduced by the bloc\u2019s outgoing competition head Margrethe Vestager.<\/p>\n<p>St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9, former French minister of Europe and foreign affairs, will complete the policy trio.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2024\/09\/16\/breton-quits-as-eu-commissioner-blames-von-der-leyens-questionable-governance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unexpected replacement of Thierry Breton<\/a>, S\u00e9journ\u00e9 is the prospective executive vice-president for prosperity and industrial strategy, responsible for the industry, SMEs, and the single market portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will guide the work to put in place the conditions for our companies to thrive \u2014 from investment and innovation to economic stability and trade and economic security,\u201d said von der Leyen.<\/p>\n<p>All nominees for the new Commission will participate in hearings at the European Parliament, which will determine their official appointment.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/eu-first-ever-commissioner-startups-zaharievea\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ekaterina Zaharieva has been nominated as the EU\u2019s first ever commissioner for&nbsp;startups, the bloc\u2019s chief Ursula von der Leyen announced today.
