It\u2019s called DeepL Voice, and it turns audio from live or video conversations into translated text.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>DeepL users can now listen to people speaking a language they don\u2019t understand and automatically translate it to one they do \u2014 in real-time.&nbsp;<\/span>The new feature currently <span>supports English, German, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Dutch, French, Turkish, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Italian.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What makes the launch of DeepL Voice exciting is that it runs on the same neural networks as the company\u2019s text-to-text offering, which it&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/deepl-new-llm-that-outperforms-google-translate-chatgpt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>claims<\/span><\/a> is the <span>\u201cworld\u2019s best\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>AI<\/span><\/a><span> translator.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As someone who\u2019s just moved to a foreign country, I\u2019m keen to try a voice-to-text translator that actually might work. All the ones I\u2019ve tried so far aren\u2019t real-time \u2014 there\u2019s a lag that renders them pretty useless \u2014 and the translation quality is pretty poor.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For face-to-face conversations, you can launch DeepL Voice on your mobile and place it between you and the other speaker. It remains to be seen whether DeepL Voice will be available on platforms like Zoom or Google Meet anytime soon.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>\u2018The next frontier\u2019 <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>While this is DeepL\u2019s first such offering, it\u2019s unlikely to be its last. <span>DeepL\u2019s founder and CEO, <\/span><span>Jarek Kutylowski<\/span>&nbsp;called <span>real-time voice translation<\/span>&nbsp;the \u201c<\/span><span><\/span><span>next frontier\u201d for the business.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDeepL is already a leader in written translation, but real-time speech translation is an entirely different story,\u201d said DeepL\u2019s founder and CEO, <\/span><span>Jarek Kutylowski.<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen translating speech as it happens, you\u2019re dealing with incomplete input, pronunciation issues, latency and more, all of which can lead to inaccurate translations and poor user experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo<span>&nbsp;we built a solution that would take these into account from the offset and enable businesses to break down language barriers by enabling them to communicate in multiple languages as required,\u201d said <span>Kutylowski.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Quality will likely be DeepL Voice\u2019s differentiating factor from the countless other providers of voice-to-text translations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From a technological perspective, DeepL\u2019s success lies in the architecture of its neural networks, the input from human editors, and the training data. But Kutylowski also believes it has a key advantage over its competitors: focus.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFocus is always an important thing,\u201d Kutylowski <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/inside-deepl-how-the-startup-is-rivalling-machine-translation-giants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>previously told<\/span><\/a><span> TNW. \u201cTranslate isn\u2019t the core business of Google \u2014 it\u2019s one of the 100 side gigs. The same goes if you consider LLMs and the OpenAIs of this world as our competition; translation is only one thing of what they\u2019re doing and their GPU is doing a tonne of different things. We\u2019re focused on one particular area.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In May, the DeepL reached a $2bn valuation after securing a new <a href=\"https:\/\/next.thenextweb.com\/news\/ai-translation-deepl-reaches-2b-valuation-new-300m-investment\">investment of $300mn<\/a> (\u20ac277mn).
