Muj Choudhury, the CEO and co-founder of British voice processing startup <\/span>RocketPhone, welcomed DeepSeek\u2019s rapid rise. He hopes the Chinese company signals a shift in the balance of AI<\/a> power.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI development has long been dominated by Silicon Valley\u2019s powerful VC firms, which wield immense influence by pouring vast sums into the technology and shaping its trajectory,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this landscape, an outsider like DeepSeek breaking through is not just impressive. It\u2019s necessary. The industry needs challengers to drive real innovation and prevent AI\u2019s future from being monopolised by a handful of players.\u201d<\/p>\n

That handful has certainly been shaken by DeepSeek\u2019s emergence. The Chinese startup\u2019s AI assistant has overtaken ChatGPT to reach the top spot on the Apple App Store\u2019s free app rankings.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s open-source models have also stunned the market<\/a>. In tests, they\u2019ve outperformed rival models from OpenAI and Meta \u2014 at just a fraction of the operating costs.<\/p>\n

The advances have shaken the stock market. According to Choudhury, they\u2019ve proven that AI innovation isn\u2019t \u201cdictated\u201d by access to supercomputers or Silicon Valley funding.<\/p>\n

Fresh from raising $10.5mn<\/a> for his own startup, Choudhury has growing optimism for Europe\u2019s AI scene.<\/p>\n

He wants DeepSeek to inspire the continent\u2019s tech sector, which is struggling<\/a> to commercialise AI innovations.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor European startups, who have historically excelled at building focused, efficient solutions rather than chasing scale at all costs, DeepSeek\u2019s rise suggests there\u2019s room for strategic players who can execute well without massive capital outlays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps this shift will finally allow us to focus on what truly matters: building practical AI systems that solve real enterprise problems and deliver tangible business value, rather than chasing the next viral consumer app.\u201d<\/p>\n
