In a not-so-subtle appeal to disaffected US talent on Friday, the country\u2019s president, Emmanuel Macron, called on researchers to \u201cchoose France, choose Europe\u201d for their next job. In a post on X, he promoted a new platform that aims to make it easier for international scientists to conduct research in the country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHere in France, research is a priority, innovation a culture, science a limitless horizon,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yann LeCun, Meta\u2019s chief AI scientist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/yann-lecun_here-in-france-research-is-a-priority-innovation-activity-7319416063006236673-ksQG?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAZi5oMBPXBw7f_KFDKTxADctbMulRrAOy8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>called<\/span><\/a><span> Macron\u2019s announcement a \u201csmart move.\u201d LeCun has previously criticised Trump\u2019s cuts to science funding at institutions such as Harvard, Columbia, and NASA.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper latest channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\" readability=\"8.5\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/tnw.events\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/tnw.events\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\" readability=\"12\">\n<p class=\"channel-cta-title\">The ???? of EU tech<\/p>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>The US seems set on destroying its public research funding system,\u201d he said in a LinkedIn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/yann-lecun_hey-europe-you-want-a-vibrant-tech-industry-activity-7299096239625695232-ORyx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>post<\/span><\/a><span> last month. \u201c[Europe] may have an opportunity to attract some of the best scientists in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>European institutions are already seizing that opportunity. Last month, France\u2019s Aix-Marseille University opened applications for its Safe Space for Science scheme, which specifically targets US researchers looking to relocate. Belgium\u2019s Vrije Universiteit Brussel has opened a similar programme targeting American scientists \u201cunder threat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Europe\u2019s appeal to refugees from a war on science<\/h2>\n<p><span>Three out of four US researchers recently surveyed by <\/span><i><span>Nature<\/span><\/i><span> said they were thinking about relocating to Europe or Canada, driven by growing concerns over <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump\u2019s<\/a> stance on science.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An exodus of US researchers could have knock-on impacts on Europe\u2019s tech ecosystem. Many of the continent\u2019s most successful startups \u2014 from DeepMind to ClimeWorks \u2014 emerged from university labs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kanika Chandaria, a climate expert at Danish carbon credit startup Agreena, told TNW that the exodus of US researchers presents a \u201cstrategic opportunity for European countries,\u201d especially in climate <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tech<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With the US rolling back climate protections, European countries could move to \u201cattract top talent and position themselves at the forefront of climate research and technology development,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, while Europe hopes to lure in disillusioned US scientists with promises of a high quality of life and research freedoms, there are potential drawbacks to relocating.
