While some struggle to gain momentum, others seem to leap forward\u2014fast.<\/p>\n<p>So, what sets apart these rapid risers? What\u2019s the secret to ecosystem transformation?<\/p>\n<p>Look no further than Bulgaria\u2014a country that\u2019s quietly but confidently building one of Europe\u2019s most exciting <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tech<\/a> stories.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The key ingredients <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For years, Bulgaria has been a magnet for global tech firms thanks to its flat 10% tax rate, highly skilled workforce, and cost efficiency. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It also leads Europe in one particularly important metric: women in tech. <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=ICT_specialists_in_employment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nearly 29% of ICT roles in Bulgaria are held by women<\/a>\u2014almost double the EU average\u2014broadening the country\u2019s available talent base and setting a powerful example for inclusivity in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019\/2020, <em>fDi Intelligence<\/em> ranked Sofia the world\u2019s most cost-effective city for fintech\u2014putting Bulgaria firmly on the radar of global <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/investor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the last few years, new initiatives have aimed at boosting the country\u2019s homegrown tech companies.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>From Telerik to Bulgaria\u2019s first homegrown unicorn<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of Bulgaria\u2019s first big successes was Telerik, a software company producing tools for developers. Although it was acquired by Progress for $262.5 million in 2014, before it could reach unicorn status, this success created a springboard for a slew of new companies. In 2022, the country welcomed its first homegrown unicorn Payhawk, a spend management platform.<\/p>\n<p>According to StartupBlink\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startupblink.com\/startup-ecosystem\/bulgaria?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Index<\/a>, the country now ranks 37th worldwide for startup creation\u2014a promising climb. Bulgarian startups attracted over <a href=\"https:\/\/itlogs.com\/bulgarian-startups-attract-e264m-in-2023-fourfold-growth-in-five-years\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u20ac264 million in investments in 2023<\/a>, marking a fourfold increase compared to five years prior\u2014a clear signal that international and regional confidence in the ecosystem is rapidly rising.<\/p>\n<p>Investment into emerging technologies in particular has been significant. According to The Recursive\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/therecursive.com\/ai-trends-central-and-eastern-europe-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">State of AI Innovation in CEE report<\/a>, over \u20ac1 billion was invested in Bulgarian and Bulgarian-founded deep tech and AI startups from 2018 \u2013 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFounders here are more mature now in how they think about business,\u201d says <span>Peter Tsatchev<\/span>, Principal at VC firm LAUNCHub Ventures. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing is a generation of entrepreneurs building with a global mindset from day one. They\u2019re creating products that can compete with startups out of London or New York. There is a trend that a lot of young folks from the region study abroad and then come back starting with the mindset of building a global company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Tsatchev <\/span>says access to capital is no longer the main challenge. Bulgaria has 15 VC firms managing around \u20ac500 million in assets, the next step is getting more people into the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/founders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founder<\/a> pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need are more success stories. When people see someone from their network build a global company, it becomes real. That ripple effect\u2014along with education [in entrepreneurship] and awareness\u2014is how we\u2019ll see the next wave of startups emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The secret sauce: The #BreakingGrounds initiative<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>However, homegrown success stories alone weren\u2019t enough to put Bulgaria on the global tech map. Public-private collaboration allows for consistent investment in visibility, structured support for startups, and positioning on the global stage. Governments must act as enablers, not just funders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BSMEPA has been playing a strategic role in orchestrating ecosystem-wide efforts\u2014coordinating stakeholders, securing international exposure, and aligning public and private forces behind a unified vision.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, BSMEPA teamed up with regional tech PR agency, Storytelling Studio, powered by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/therecursive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Recursive<\/a><\/em> to launch <a href=\"https:\/\/breakinggrounds.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">#BreakingGrounds<\/a>\u2014an ambitious initiative to reshape Bulgaria\u2019s international reputation and establish it as a European deep tech leader by 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The mission? To elevate Bulgaria\u2019s presence on the global stage by showcasing its top tech talent and startups on Europe\u2019s top tech stages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2024 was a pivotal year for #BreakingGrounds,\u201d says Teodor Antonio Georgiev, Co-Founder &amp; Head at Storytelling Studio. \u201cThrough our delegations at events like Web Summit, Slush, VivaTech, and Bits &amp; Pretzels, we engaged over 350,000 global investors and innovators. The country\u2019s startup ecosystem is becoming more visible, more networked, and more ambitious in how it presents itself to the world. With public and private actors increasingly aligned, there\u2019s still ground to cover, but the intent\u2014and potential\u2014is clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the fact that our political image on a broader level is not always where we want it to be, there is a clear commitment from the people within the government and institutions to support the development of our startup ecosystem. A perfect example of this is that the very first EU Commissioner for Startups in history is Bulgarian \u2014 Ekaterina Zaharieva.
