{"id":16390,"date":"2025-05-13T13:31:57","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T13:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1413612"},"modified":"2025-05-13T13:31:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T13:31:57","slug":"helsings-ai-submarine-joins-europes-growing-ocean-drone-fleet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=16390","title":{"rendered":"Helsing\u2019s AI submarine joins Europe\u2019s growing ocean drone fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Helsing, Europe\u2019s best-funded defence tech startup, has unveiled its latest product \u2014 an autonomous mini-submarine for underwater reconnaissance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dubbed SG-1 Fathom, the sub is the latest addition to Europe\u2019s growing fleet of ocean drones, which aim to better protect the continent\u2019s ships and subsea infrastructure from surveillance, sabotage, and attacks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The 1.95-metre Fathom is designed to slowly patrol the ocean for up to three months at a time. The vessel is powered by an <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI<\/a> platform called Lura. The system is a large acoustic model (LAM) \u2014 like a large language model (LLM) but for sound.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lura is able to classify sounds made by ships and submarines and then pinpoint their locations. Helsing said the algorithm can identify sounds at volumes 10 times quieter than competing AI models. European nations NATO are also stepping up their maritime defences amid<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/europe\/nato-russia-undersea-cable-pipeline-prevention-212d93ff?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>growing concerns<\/span><\/a> <span>over Russian aggression.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Ukraine, ocean drones have already become an important tool in its war against Moscow. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>High-tech arsenal&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>The war in Ukraine is increasingly characterised by battles between <\/span><span>autonomous systems<\/span><span>, mainly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, the battle between machines is also playing out in the seas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this month, Ukraine used its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MAGURA_V5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Magura naval drone<\/span><\/a><span> to shoot down two Russian aircraft. The Magura, armed with missiles, has been used extensively since 2023 to attack and destroy Russian ships and aircraft.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The country is also expanding its fleet of waterborne drones. Last week, <\/span><span>Ukrainian company Nordex unveiled the Seawolf, an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) for combat, surveillance, and border security applications.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>British company Kraken is developing a similar uncrewed boat that can engage enemies in combat or deliver cargo and personnel. Meanwhile, Denmark is set to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/danish-army-trial-autonomous-ocean-drones-defence-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>trial autonomous sailboats<\/span><\/a><span> to patrol the Baltic Sea looking for signs of potential threats.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The adoption of drones at sea comes amid rising geopolitical tensions, which have prompted European officials to go all-in on defence tech.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In March 2025, EU leaders<\/span> <span>endorsed<\/span> <span>the \u201cReArm Europe\u201d plan, aiming to mobilise up to \u00a3683bn (\u20ac800bn) over the next four years to enhance military capabilities. Similarly, the UK government has<\/span> <span>committed<\/span> <span>to raising defence spending to 2.5% of GDP and wants to spend at least 10% of its defence budget on \u201cinnovative technologies\u201d.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Helsing looks to capitalise on this political momentum. The company told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-08\/helsing-europe-s-most-valuable-defense-tech-company-is-facing-allegations-from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span> last month that it has <\/span><span>\u201cwon over a dozen contracts\u201d with \u201ctotal order volumes of hundreds of millions of dollars\u201d since its founding in 2021.<\/span><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Helsing, which is valued at <\/span><span>\u20ac5bn<\/span><span> ($5.4bn), is perhaps best known for its combat drones and AI <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">software<\/a> that acts like the brain for military vehicles such as fighter jets. Fathom marks its first entry into ocean-bound technology.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Several naval forces have already shown interest in Helsing\u2019s autonomous submarine, the company said. It aims to deploy the first fleets of underwater drones within a year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Defence tech is a key theme of <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/conference\/the-assembly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Assembly<\/a>, the invite-only policy track of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/41IbD3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><i><span>TNW Conference<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span>.
