Munich-based defence tech startup Helsing has raised <\/span>\u20ac600mn as geopolitical tensions trigger a flood of capital into AI warfare.<\/span><\/p>\n

The large investment was led by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek\u2019s VC firm Prima Materia. It <\/span>brings the company\u2019s total raised to north of \u20ac1.3bn,<\/span> building on a <\/span>\u20ac450mn funding round in July<\/span><\/a> last year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Helsing didn\u2019t disclose its updated valuation. However, according to the <\/span>Financial Times<\/span><\/i>, the unicorn company is now worth \u20ac12bn, making it one of Europe\u2019s five most valuable private tech companies. <\/span><\/p>\n

Prima Materia<\/span> was one of Helsing\u2019s earliest backers \u2014 a move that sparked <\/span>boycotts<\/span><\/a> among artists on Spotify, who feared their use of the platform was helping to fund war. <\/span>That backlash clearly hasn\u2019t deterred Ek, though, who said Helsing\u2019s technology ensures \u201cstrategic autonomy\u201d for Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Founded in 2021, Helsing has developed an autonomous strike drone now in use by several European militaries, including Ukraine\u2019s. The company also recently unveiled plans for a fleet of autonomous <\/span>reconnaissance submarines<\/span><\/a>, and last week successfully used its self-driving system to pilot a Saab fighter jet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Helsing is riding a defence investment boom as war in Ukraine and rising security concerns push European governments to double down on military spending and explore AI technologies for warfare. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to a new report<\/span> from McKinsey<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>investment in European defence tech startups<\/a> rose by over 500% between 2021 and 2024 compared to the previous three years.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Helsing is currently Europe\u2019s most valuable defence tech startup, many other companies are experiencing rising demand for their technologies. <\/span><\/p>\n

In May, <\/span>German <\/span>dual-use drone maker<\/span><\/a> Quantum Systems raised \u20ac160mn at a valuation north of \u20ac1bn<\/span>, shortly after Portuguese drone startup Tekever also reached the coveted unicorn status. <\/span><\/p>\n

ARX Robotics, another Munich-based company, recently raised \u20ac31mn to expand its fleet of <\/span>autonomous land drones<\/span><\/a>, shortly after announcing its <\/span>plans to invest \u00a345mn into a<\/span> new UK factory<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kate Leaman, chief market analyst at online broker AvaTrade, <\/span>previously told TNW<\/span><\/a> that military tech companies have \u201chuge potential\u201d for growth \u2014 particularly those with AI-driven solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re already seeing a shake-up in the defence sector, with AI-focused players like Palantir outperforming more traditional defence giants,\u201d Leaman said. \u201cThis suggests that cutting-edge, tech-centric firms could possibly capture a sizeable share of the market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
