{"id":1687,"date":"2020-12-09T19:53:52","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T19:53:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1331103"},"modified":"2020-12-09T19:53:52","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T19:53:52","slug":"ftc-announces-lawsuit-against-facebook-for-illegal-monopolization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=1687","title":{"rendered":"FTC announces lawsuit against Facebook for \u2018illegal monopolization\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/tnw?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F02%2FFacebook_Alert.png&amp;signature=6d7393bf9536de01b595b5c31081ffd5\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today announced its lawsuit against Facebook alleging the company has formed an illegal monopoly based on anticompetitive practices.<\/p>\n<p>According to a notice from the FTC, the suit involves the company\u2019s Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp services as well as Facebook\u2018s alleged imposition of anti-competitive practices on software developers.<\/p>\n<p>The notice goes on to state that the US government seeks an injunction that would force the company to divest from those and potentially other properties and prevent Facebook from acquiring new companies without federal permission.<\/p>\n<p>Per the FTC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2020\/12\/ftc-sues-facebook-illegal-monopolization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"22\">\n<p>Following a lengthy investigation in cooperation with a coalition of attorneys general of 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam, the complaint alleges that Facebook has engaged in a systematic strategy\u2014including its 2012 acquisition of up-and-coming rival Instagram, its 2014 acquisition of the mobile messaging app WhatsApp, and the imposition of anticompetitive conditions on software developers\u2014to eliminate threats to its monopoly. This course of conduct harms competition, leaves consumers with few choices for personal social networking, and deprives advertisers of the benefits of competition.<\/p>\n<p>The FTC is seeking a permanent injunction in federal courtthat could, among other things: require divestitures of assets, including Instagram and WhatsApp; prohibit Facebook from imposing anticompetitive conditions on software developers; and require Facebook to seek prior notice and approval for future mergers and acquisitions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Quick take:<\/strong> It\u2019ll take some further analysis to see how much teeth this thing has considering the US is in a bit of a transitional state right now.
