Image credit: NSO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"2326\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/deep-radio-images-of-sun-suggest-our-star-is-hiding-a-secret-bdfe468e8b1f?source=friends_link&amp;sk=f80be6da188445ec59dfc42bfe2f6853\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sun<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>expel shock waves of hot gas and energy at speeds around 1.6 million kilometers per hour (one million MPH). Even at speeds that could circle the Earth 40 times a second, it still takes nearly a year for these shock waves to reach the Voyager spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7ac2\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Cosmic ray electrons \u2014 negatively-charged subatomic particles racing from the Sun \u2014 are propelled by shock waves from a powerful stellar eruption. This form of radiation has been theorized previously, but cosmic ray electrons have now been seen for the first time, by both<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/tough-decisions-loom-as-voyager-just-keeps-going-and-going-c843987e13c0?source=friends_link&amp;sk=1c83ee550f7abb0b3b62ff9f168492d1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager 1 and Voyager 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cd2e\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cWhat we see here, specifically, is a certain mechanism whereby when the shock wave first contacts the interstellar magnetic field lines passing through the spacecraft, it reflects and accelerates some of the cosmic ray electrons,\u201d explains Professor<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/now.uiowa.edu\/2020\/12\/voyager-spacecraft-detect-new-type-solar-electron-burst\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Don Gurnett<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b111\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>These cosmic ray electrons race through space at nearly the speed of light \u2014 roughly 670 times faster than the shock waves that originally propelled them. Several days later, a second wave of slower, lower-energy, electrons arrived at the spacecraft. Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"3f26\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Electrons in the interstellar medium between stars are reflected by the magnetic field at the edge of our<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/jupiter-and-saturn-race-toward-the-great-conjunction-of-2020\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Solar System<\/a>. The motion of the shock wave, ejected from the Sun, accelerates the wave through the magnetic field. These electrons then spiral along the magnetic field lines, gaining speed, as they travel away from the shock.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f08a\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThe idea that shock waves accelerate particles is not new. It all has to do with how it works, the mechanism. And the fact we detected it in a new realm \u2014 the interstellar medium \u2014 which is much different than in the solar wind where similar processes have been observed. No one has seen it with an interstellar shock wave in a whole new pristine medium,\u201d Gurnett explains.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3b4e\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Examination of these processes could help astronomers learn more about exotic flare stars, which vary brightness to an extreme degree, driven by storms on their surface.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a37b\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Learning about these storms will also assist NASA,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/https-medium-com-jamesmaynard-31595-elon-musk-unveils-starship-and-marvin-the-martian-would-be-proud-94931679828f?source=friends_link&amp;sk=1ddf54056faa83a11b4e4715f670372e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>, and other organizations looking to place space colonists on the surface of Mars. The mission took advantage of a rare alignment of<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-jupiter-collide-with-a-massive-planet-47353e4a9e62?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b38b80c83775cf91569cfb9f30d8e57b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">planets<\/a>, allowing an easier journey around the giant worlds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ed93\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Currently 22.5 billion kilometers (14 billion miles) from Earth, the Voyager spacecraft are the most-distant human-made objects anywhere.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4ac7\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Cosmic ray instruments onboard the Voyager spacecraft revealed electrons seen by the detectors were reflected and accelerated by solar eruptions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d3c3\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cBarring any serious spacecraft subsystem failures, the Voyagers may survive until the early twenty-first century (~ 2025), when diminishing power and hydrazine levels will prevent further operation. Were it not for these dwindling consumables and the possibility of losing lock on the faint Sun, our tracking antennas could continue to \u201ctalk\u201d with the Voyagers for another century or two!\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/voyager.jpl.nasa.gov\/mission\/did-you-know\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">NASA describes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a154\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>The edge of the Solar System can be defined in a number of ways. The heliopause, where the streams of charged particles from the Sun give way to the interstellar medium, was recently passed by the Voyager spacecraft. However, gravitational effects from the Sun stretch out much further \u2014 to the Oort Cloud \u2014 a diffuse group of rocky and icy material surrounding our Solar System. These intrepid robotic explorers will not reach this distance for tens of thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p id=\"263e\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Although the two Pioneer spacecraft were launched before Voyager, these two craft are not as fast as Voyager. Pioneer 11 is due to leave the Solar System in 2027, and in 2043, New Horizons (which explored<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/plutos-icy-heart-controls-the-planet-s-winds-95eb997d487e?source=friends_link&amp;sk=a094676089451c5f2d0a26965721c7d4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pluto<\/a>) will pass that mark.
