But many players, pundits, and coaches say the system is so slow and inconclusive that it\u2019s causing more problems than it solves.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.4457831325301\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s \u201cclear and obvious\u201d we need a serious discussion about VAR. Sure I\u2019m not alone in feeling like they are falling out of love with the game in its current state. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5FGgLtqbHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/5FGgLtqbHs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 James Milner (@JamesMilner) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesMilner\/status\/1332742400981172225?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">November 28, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now researchers from the Technical University of Munich have used machine learning to find out&nbsp;what supporters are saying about VAR on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The team first used the official Twitter API to collect more than 600,000&nbsp;English language tweets made&nbsp;during 129 matches of the 2019-20 Premier League season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used the official hashtag for each game to ensure that the tweets really refer to the game in question,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tum.de\/nc\/en\/about-tum\/news\/press-releases\/details\/36360\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>&nbsp;<span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Dr&nbsp;Otto Kolbinger from TUM\u2019s Chair of Performance Analysis and Sports Informatics.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/plugged\/2020\/11\/30\/why-ai-is-the-future-of-home-security\/\">Why AI is the future of home security<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The researchers then created a subsample of tweets made when VAR incidents occurred, which they grouped as either positive, neutral, or negative. This was used to train a text classification model to analyze each tweet\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>The model categorized 76.24% of the 58,000 tweets about VAR as negative, 11.43% as neutral, and just 12.33% as positive.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers say that tweets about the video referee were typically far more negative than those mentioning other aspects of the games. They also found that deployments of VAR made the mood of fans \u201csignificantly worse\u201d for the next 20 minutes on average.<\/p>\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Dr&nbsp;Otto Kolbinger said the findings show<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;improvements to VAR are needed:<\/p>\n<div id=\"c61235\" class=\"frame frame-default frame-type-in2template_news-textmedia frame-layout-0\">\n<div class=\"ce-textpic ce-left ce-above\">\n<div class=\"ce-bodytext\" readability=\"34\">\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The football associations should attempt to communicate all VAR decisions with greater transparency.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span><span lang=\"EN-US\">To ensure this transparency, the associations could broadcast the communications between the referee on the field and the video referee, as it is done in field hockey.
