{"id":1841,"date":"2020-12-17T17:50:26","date_gmt":"2020-12-17T17:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1332367"},"modified":"2020-12-17T17:50:26","modified_gmt":"2020-12-17T17:50:26","slug":"ai-co-pilots-us-air-force-spy-plane-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=1841","title":{"rendered":"AI co-pilots US Air Force spy plane for the first time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An AI system has helped control a&nbsp;US military aircraft for the first time ever, the Air Force announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<span>ARTU\u00b5&nbsp;algorithm flew alongside a pilot aboard a U-2 Dragon Lady spy plane during a test flight on December 15.<\/span> The system&nbsp;took control of sensor employment and tactical navigation on the aircraft, while the pilot flew the plane.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTogether, they flew a reconnaissance mission during a simulated missile strike,\u201d the Air Force said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/2448376\/ai-copilot-air-force-achieves-first-military-flight-with-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a statement<\/a>. \u201cARTU\u00b5\u2019s primary responsibility was finding enemy launchers while the pilot was on the lookout for threatening aircraft, both sharing the U-2\u2019s radar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/neural\/2020\/08\/21\/an-ai-just-embarrassed-the-us-air-force-in-a-virtual-dogfight\/\">An AI just embarrassed the US Air Force in a virtual dogfight<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>ARTU\u00b5 is a modified version of the open-source algorithm \u00b5Zero, which has been used to defeat humans at games such as Go and Chess. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Air Force used more than half a million simulated training iterations to enable the algorithm to manipulate the plane\u2019s sensor. The ultimate aim is to give the&nbsp;US military a technological edge over rivals such as China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that in order to fight and win in a future conflict with a peer adversary, we must have a decisive digital advantage,\u201d said air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Q.
