The planetary disk in the HD 106906 system is similar, in some ways, to the Kuiper Belt in our own system.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4159\" class=\"jw jx fh au jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks kt cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>To ancient Romans, Planet X is Planet Ten!<\/h2>\n<p id=\"dd99\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy ku ia ib ic kv ie if ig kw ii ij ik kx im in io ky iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Beyond the orbit of Neptune, a myriad of bodies, including the dwarf planet Pluto, circle around the Sun in the frigid Kuiper Belt near at the outskirts of the Solar System. Many of these bodies have unusual orbits which seem to betray something unseen in \u2014 or just beyond \u2014 their midst.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cbd1\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Since 2012, some astronomers and planetary scientists have suggested a large planet, perhaps five to 10 times larger than Earth, might be hidden beyond the distant belt of rocky and icy bodies. Such a world would follow a highly-eccentric orbit around the Sun, making it difficult to find the planet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"665d\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>In 2013, the planet HD 106906 b was seen by astronomers using the Magellan Telescopes in Chile, orbiting far from its parent star, 336 light-years from Earth. This world is much larger than what is proposed for Planet X (sometimes called Planet Nine) \u2014 perhaps 3,500 times the mass of the Earth. This system is thought to resemble our own at a time when the planets of our solar system first took shape. Other, new worlds, ripe with possibilities, could now be forming in that distant system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9345\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This planetary system is a mere 15 million years old, and HD 106906 b orbits its sun at a distance 737 times further than the Earth keeps from the Sun. This distant world was first measured traveling along an orbit tilted 21 degrees from the main disk of debris.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d677\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Researchers were uncertain whether the planet is a long-term member of the system, or if it will be flung off into space. In 2015, researchers found the outer disk in this system is lopsided, compared to the rest of the disk. This may have been due to a catastrophic event, which might have driven HD 106906 b out to the far-flung reaches of the alien solar system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a8d0\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThe idea is that every time the planet comes to its closest approach to the binary star, it stirs up the material in the disk. So, every time the planet comes through, it truncates the disk and pushes it up on one side. This scenario has been tested with simulations of this system with the planet on a similar orbit \u2014 this was before we knew what the orbit of the planet was,\u201d explained Robert De Rosa of the European Southern Observatory.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e426\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>However, analysis suggests that any event that would have caused the offset disk would have also flung such a world away from the system. A passing star would have been needed to prevent such a world from becoming a rogue<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/the-cosmic-companion\/episodes\/Jupiter-and-Saturn-Close-in-for-the-Great-Conjunction-of-2020-enaucf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">planet<\/a>, drifting between the stars.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2a1f\" class=\"jw jx fh au jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks kt cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Funny seeing you in this neighborhood<\/h2>\n<p id=\"b49a\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy ku ia ib ic kv ie if ig kw ii ij ik kx im in io ky iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>A new study published in The Astronomical Journal examines the position of HD 106906 b over 14 years, finding the planet will remain within the system for the long term.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d757\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This presents its own question \u2014 how did such a massive world find itself in such an eccentric orbit, so far from its parent star? But drag within the system\u2019s gas disk caused the planet\u2019s orbit to decay, forcing it to migrate inward toward its stellar pair. The gravitational effects from the whirling twin stars then kicked it out onto an eccentric orbit that almost threw it out of the system and into the void of interstellar space. Then a passing star from outside the system stabilized the exoplanet\u2019s orbit and prevented it from leaving its home system,\u201d the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/hubblesite.org\/contents\/news-releases\/2020\/news-2020-53\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble team describes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4928\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Analysis of HD 106906 reveals that massive worlds like this might form in far-flung orbits when nascent solar systems are still forming. Passing<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/mysterious-blue-ring-nebula-reveals-secrets-of-binary-stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>could also play a significant role in the evolution of the massive, frozen worlds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c478\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cSomething happens very early that starts kicking planets and comets outward, and then you have passing stars that stabilize their orbits. We are slowly accumulating the evidence needed to understand the diversity of extrasolar planets and how that relates to the puzzling aspects of our own solar system,\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2020\/12\/10\/exoplanet-around-distant-star-resembles-our-reputed-planet-nine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Meiji Nguyen<\/a>, a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, explains.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3a15\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>If a Planet Nine exists within our own Kuiper Belt, it may have arrived in the outer reaches of the Solar System after being flung out there by the undisputed king of the solar system,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/deep-radio-images-of-sun-suggest-our-star-is-hiding-a-secret-bdfe468e8b1f?source=friends_link&amp;sk=f80be6da188445ec59dfc42bfe2f6853\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a>. Once there, a passing star may have stabilized its orbit within the Kuiper Belt.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"d49e\" class=\"jw jx fh au jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks kt cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Long ago, and star away<\/h2>\n<p id=\"4f60\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy ku ia ib ic kv ie if ig kw ii ij ik kx im in io ky iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Dr. Paul Kalas of UC Berkeley and De Rosa began a search for a<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/red-giant-star-betelgeuse-is-smaller-and-closer-than-thought-9d32d2f6cd42?source=friends_link&amp;sk=112d69220a478bb199c46dcf26176d1d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">star<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that may have passed by the HD 106906 system, stabilizing the massive world in its distant orbit. However, using star positioning data from the European Space Agency\u2019s Gaia spacecraft, the team was able to accurately measure the distance between the two bodies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"befb\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cWe achieve high astrometric precision by cross-registering the locations of background stars with the Gaia astrometric catalog, providing the subpixel location of HD 106906 that is either saturated or obscured by coronagraphic optical elements,\u201d researchers describe in an article published in<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-3881\/abc012\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em class=\"iu\">The Astronomical Journal<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4695\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>This remarkable finding was made from just 15 years of data following a<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/weird-exoplanet-discovered-by-tess-spacecraft-strange-world-indeed-7872a12296e6?source=friends_link&amp;sk=e6fae0112eb241d73dcb316ff76e20bc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">planet<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>with an orbit lasting 15,000 years. The study also reveals that HD 106906 is tilted more than initially believed \u2014 between 36 and 44 degrees to the planetary disk.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4cbe\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cTo highlight why this is weird, we can just look at our own Solar System and see that all the planets lie roughly in the same plane. It would be bizarre if, say, Jupiter just happened to be inclined 30 degrees relative to the plane that every other planet orbits in. This raises all sorts of questions about how HD 106906 b ended up so far out on such an inclined orbit,\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacetelescope.org\/news\/heic2021\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nguyen explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"iw ix iy iz ja jb\">\n<div class=\"jk s ci\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gbz_VRKMrh4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"jr js eu es et jt ju au b av aw ax\">In the video above, take a look at how HD 106906 could teach us about PLanet X \u2014 should it exist \u2014 in our solar system. This is what makes it the sole candidate we have found thus far whose orbit is analogous to the hypothetical Planet Nine,\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cm jv\" href=\"https:\/\/hubblesite.org\/contents\/news-releases\/2020\/news-2020-53\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nguyen said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"382f\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph>Although the pull of an unseen planet could explain the unusual movement of objects in the Kuiper Belt, other possibilities exist. Instead of one large planet, it may be possible that several smaller bodies may be responsible.
