After a Reuters report<\/a> that Apple had revived Project Titan<\/a> \u2014 AKA the \u2018Apple Car\u2018 \u2014 Tesla CEO Elon Musk decided to share an interesting bit of insider information to share. Apparently, \u201cduring the darkest days\u201d of developing the Model 3, Musk reached out to Tim Cook to discuss Apple buying Tesla.<\/p>\n

Cook reportedly refused.<\/p>\n

During the darkest days of the Model 3 program, I reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla (for 1\/10 of our current value). He refused to take the meeting.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s surprising that Cook would refuse to even meet, given Apple has been hard at work on self-driving AI for years. Musk\u2019s comments also seem to dispel any likelihood Apple would collaborate on self-driving tech with Tesla as well; rumors indicated there\u2019s a chance Apple might sell or license its technology rather than come out with a vehicle altogether.<\/p>\n

Musk also expressed doubt about claims in the Reuters report that Apple is working on a \u201cmonocell\u201d battery; he claims it\u2019s \u201celectrochemically impossible,\u201d and suggested the tech might instead be closer to Tesla\u2019s structural battery pack the company discussed on \u2018Battery Day<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n

Still, a lot could change between now and Apple\u2019s rumored 2024 goal. In any case, it\u2019s interesting to know that in an alternate timeline, Tesla \u2014 which has often been called \u201cthe Apple of cars\u201d \u2014 could have actually been owned by Apple.<\/p>\n
