Most astronomers believe the young Earth, still cooling off from its formation, was struck by a mars-sized body called Theia, roughly 4.5 billion years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"4157\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>As the proto-Moon orbited Earth, it cooled, and gathered debris from the surrounding region of space. At the time, the Moon was much closer to Earth than it is today. The team of investigators examined a wide range of possible conditions, ranging from no spin to a quick rotation, and from glancing blows to more direct impacts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0430\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Interestingly, when simulations tested the effect of a non-spinning version of Theia, the impact resulted in a satellite with roughly 80 percent of the mass of the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl kj\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/water-on-the-moon-isnt-just-hiding-in-the-shadows\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Moon<\/a>. Adding just a small amount of spin resulted in a second Moon in orbit around Earth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7f5e\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Some of the impacts studied resulted in merging of the early Earth and Theia, while others showed just a glancing blow between the bodies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"639f\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cAmong the resulting debris disc in some impacts, we find a self-gravitating clump of material. It is roughly the mass of the Moon, contains [about one percent] iron like the Moon\u2026 The clump contains mainly impactor material near its core but becomes increasingly enriched in proto-Earth material near its surface,\u201d researchers describe in an article describing the study, published in<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl kj\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnras\/article\/500\/3\/2861\/6007797\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em class=\"hu\">Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"hw hx hy hz ia ib\"><figcaption class=\"is it da cy cz iu iv cf b fd ch gg\">In the video above, take a look at simulations showing details of an ancient impact between early Earth and a Mar-sized impactor, called Theia, forming the Moon.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"96c0\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>As the young proto-Moon settled into orbit around the Earth, the young body likely grew by collecting debris from the space around our homeworld. This body was seen developing a small iron core, surrounded by material from both Theia and the early Earth, similar to what we see on the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl kj\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/the-moon-had-a-really-rough-day-da2c16b8900b?source=friends_link&amp;sk=3c5a96073b99b792ad1fe99f38b7cdf0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c16b\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting that some of our simulations produced this orbiting clump of material that is relatively not much smaller than the Moon, with a disc of additional material around the post-impact Earth that would help the clump grow in mass over time\u2026 I wouldn\u2019t say that this is the Moon, but it\u2019s certainly a very interesting place to continue looking,\u201d Dr.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl kj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2020-12\/du-ssc120320.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sergio Ruiz-Bonilla<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>in the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University, said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"804e\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Researchers will continue refining models, examining how mass, velocity, spin, and other factors could affect the impact that formed the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cl kj\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/bacteria-mining-the-moon-and-mars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/syndication\/2021\/01\/03\/supercomputer-simulation-re-enacts-the-birth-of-the-moon\/\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The formation of the Moon billions of years ago is cloaked in mystery.
