{"id":2097,"date":"2021-01-05T14:56:22","date_gmt":"2021-01-05T14:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1333065"},"modified":"2021-01-05T14:56:22","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T14:56:22","slug":"watch-this-amazing-ai-enhanced-montage-of-lumiere-films-historians-will-hate-it-though","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2097","title":{"rendered":"Watch this amazing AI-enhanced montage of Lumi\u00e8re films \u2014 historians will hate it though"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F01%2FUntitled-design-2021-01-05T122756.834.png&amp;signature=4e978c74b07494916f02e8f69b0683d1\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>YouTuber Denis Shiryaev has unveiled his most spectacular AI video restoration yet: a new montage of footage shot&nbsp;by the Lumi\u00e8re brothers.<\/p>\n<p>Shiryaev spent months using machine learning to colorize,&nbsp;upscale, and enhance&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC7Q3FFh73ru4k9lx4Yf9WYg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a collection of films<\/a> by the French cinema pioneers.<\/p>\n<p>He began by using an algorithm developed by his company,&nbsp;Neural Love, to remove duplicate frames from the footage and restore the film\u2019s original frame rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a crucial step to achieve the effect of fluid movement when we do a version of the video at 60 frames per second (fps),\u201d&nbsp;Shiryaev explained <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YZuP41ALx_Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/dutch-disruptors\/2020\/12\/15\/meet-the-4-scale-ups-using-data-to-save-the-planet\/\">Meet the 4 scale-ups using data to save the planet<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He also applied stabilization to the footage, removed noise where required, and corrected some of the damage to the films.<\/p>\n<p>Shiryaev then used neural networks to upscale every frame to 4K resolution,&nbsp;generate more frames&nbsp;until he reached 60 fps, and restore a realistic playback speed to the video.<\/p>\n<p>He also colorized the footage and added detail to the&nbsp;faces&nbsp;with a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/neural\/2020\/06\/29\/what-is-gan-the-ai-technique-that-makes-computers-creative-syndication\/\">generative adversarial network (GAN)<\/a> based algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he added new sounds to the film:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>The sounds are not real, and sometimes I did a terrible job.&nbsp;But I really like this ambient effect&nbsp;when, for example, you can see and hear a dog starting to bark on screen and experience the moment as if you were there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You can check it out for yourself in the video below:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YZuP41ALx_Q?start=273&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The video joins&nbsp;Shiryaev\u2019s growing filmography of AI-powered restorations. But not everyone approves of his work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/history-colourisation-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Academics warn<\/a> that it creates a distorted image of the past and undermines the choices of the original photographer.
