Ahh, the wild world of earbuds. Just when you think we\u2019re all on the same page and agree the headphones should go in<\/em> your ears, Bose comes along and makes a pair that\u2026 sits above them? This really is too much for this time of year.<\/p>\n

Anyway, they\u2019re called the Sport Open Earbuds and are a pair of wireless, uh, earbuds, designed for, um, sport. And they\u2019re open.<\/span><\/p>\n

What this actually means is Bose\u2018s new earbuds dispense with the rubber tip you normally find on these devices. Instead, the Sport Open Earbuds use a \u201ccontoured earhook\u201d that grasp your sound flaps\u2019 outer ridge. According to the company, this is all achieved with \u201cvirtually no skin contact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sounds a lot like life during lockdown.<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/a>The somewhat disconcerting noise-making side of Bose\u2019s new earbuds. They make me shudder.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It\u2019s important to note that Bose\u2018s new earbuds don\u2019t work via bone conduction. The Sport Open Earbuds use a \u201ctiny dipole transducer\u201d that is meant to deliver pristine sound near the ear, yet doesn\u2019t travel much beyond it. One assumes this will work in a similar way to the Bose Frames<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The question though is\u2026 why? Why release headphones like this?<\/p>\n

Once you get over the initial surprise, Bose\u2018s new earbuds do have an exploitable niche. First off, having little bits of rubber in your ears isn\u2019t always particularly comfortable \u2014 especially if you\u2019re exercising intently. Sometimes, I just want my ears to breathe<\/em>. The Sport Open Earbuds can solve this.<\/p>\n

Then there are exercises where blocking out noise from the world isn\u2019t exactly a great idea. No one wants to be running along a road at night without being able to hear a damn thing. Unless that\u2019s your kink, then more power to you, friend.<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/a>Hope it\u2019s just the image, but the texture of the case\u2019s insides is making my skin crawl.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Before we go, let\u2019s talk a little about specs. One downside of Bose\u2018s new earbuds are their bulkiness. The company says they measure 48mm by 55mm and each bud weighs a \u201cmere\u201d 14g. For some perspective, the AirPods Pro measure 21.8mm by 30.9mm and weigh 5.4g per bud.<\/p>\n

There may be some benefits to this though. The AirPods Pro deliver 4.5 hours of listening time on a single charge, while the Sport Open Earbuds are claimed to have 8. I guess it\u2019s all down to whether you\u2019re happy to take some extra weight for added juice.<\/p>\n

Basically, I\u2019m intrigued and excited by these things \u2014 and can\u2019t wait to get them on my sound flaps.<\/p>\n
