We’ve made the decision to remove the PogChamp emote following statements from the face of the emote encouraging further violence after what took place in the Capitol today.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Twitch (@Twitch) January 7, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u201cWe want the sentiment and use of Pog to live on \u2013 its meaning is much bigger than the person depicted or image itself\u2013 and it has a big place in Twitch culture,\u201d the company announced on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cHowever, we can\u2019t in good conscience continue to enable use of the image.\u201d<\/p>\n The ban spotlights Twitch\u2019s growing role in politics.<\/p>\n The platform has recently attracted a wide range of pundits and<\/span> professional politicians, from Chapo Trap House to Donald Trump.<\/p>\n US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has used it<\/a> to encourage viewers to vote and raise donations for charity<\/a>. She\u2019s also protested the military\u2019s attempts to attracts recruits through Twitch<\/a>.<\/p>\n Activists have also used the platform to engage their communities. The New York Times reported<\/a> that Twitch had \u201ctransformed into an unexpected hub of social activism\u201d after Black Lives Matter protestors used the service to stream their demonstrations.<\/p>\n The company itself has also waded into politics. Twitch recently banned the Confederate flag because of its \u201chistoric and symbolic association with slavery and white supremacist groups,\u201d but was rebuked for posting a video supporting BLM as it featured an overwhelming number of white creators. The video was pulled after a public outcry.<\/p>\n Banning PogChamp has also attracted some criticism. But keeping it could have been seen as endorsing the views of Gutierrez. And there are plenty of more likable faces that can replace his.<\/p>\n PogChamp is no more.
