German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes Twitter\u2018s ban of US President Donald Trump is \u201cproblematic\u201d because rules around free speech should be set by lawmakers rather than tech firms, her spokesman said on Monday.<\/p>\n

Spokesperson Steffen Seibert agreed with Twitter\u2018s decision to flag Trump\u2019s tweets, as <\/span>social network operators have to prevent their platforms from being \u201cpoisoned by hatred, by lies and by incitement to violence.\u201d But he argued that banning Trump\u2019s account was a step too far:<\/span><\/p>\n

Freedom of opinion is a fundamental right of elementary importance. This fundamental right can be interfered with, but through the law and within the framework defined by the legislature, not according to the decision of the management of social media platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Merkel joins a growing list of prominent European politicians who\u2019ve criticized Twitter\u2018s permaban of Trump\u2019s personal account \u201cdue to the risk of further incitement of violence\u201d following the deadly riots at the US Capitol building.<\/p>\n

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Mair warned<\/a> that \u201c<\/span>regulation of the digital world cannot be done by the digital oligarchy,\u201d while British Health Secretary Matt Hanock said<\/a> the move showed social media giants were now \u201ctaking editorial decisions:\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I think it raises a very important question, which is it means that the social media platforms are making editorial decisions. And that is a very big question because then it raises questions about their editorial judgments and the way that they\u2019re regulated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Russian opposition leader Alexie Navalny called the Twitter suspension an \u201cunacceptable act of censorship\u201d that would be exploited by authoritarian regimes.<\/p>\n

Navalny suggested that Twitter create a transparent committee and appeals process for such decisions. But Merkel would prefer the US to follow Germany\u2018s lead and strengthen the regulation of social media firms. social media<\/p>\n
