{"id":2253,"date":"2021-01-12T18:40:24","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T18:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1333851"},"modified":"2021-01-12T18:40:24","modified_gmt":"2021-01-12T18:40:24","slug":"containment-algorithms-wont-stop-super-intelligent-ai-scientists-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2253","title":{"rendered":"Containment algorithms won\u2019t stop super-intelligent AI, scientists warn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F01%2FUntitled-design-2021-01-12T182000.105.png&amp;signature=f590b84f5ad32bbe4acd8d1ebb55575c\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A team of computer scientists has used theoretical calculations to argue that algorithms could not control a super-intelligent AI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jair.org\/index.php\/jair\/article\/view\/12202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Their study<\/a> addresses what&nbsp;Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom <a href=\"https:\/\/publicism.info\/philosophy\/superintelligence\/10.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">calls<\/a> the control problem: how do we ensure super-intelligence machines act in our interests?<\/p>\n<p>The researchers conceived of a&nbsp;theoretical containment algorithm that would resolve this problem by simulating the AI\u2018s&nbsp;behavior, and halting the program if its actions became harmful.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" data-page-number=\"4\" data-loaded=\"true\">\n<div class=\"textLayer\" readability=\"32.794736842105\">\n<div readability=\"11.747368421053\">But their analysis found that&nbsp;it would be fundamentally impossible to build an algorithm that could control such a machine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpg.de\/16231640\/0108-bild-computer-scientists-we-wouldn-t-be-able-to-control-superintelligent-machines-149835-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Iyad Rahwan, Director of the Center for Humans and Machines:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>If you break the problem down to basic rules from theoretical computer science, it turns out that an algorithm that would command an AI not to destroy the world could inadvertently halt its own operations. If this happened, you would not know whether the containment algorithm is still analyzing the threat, or whether it has stopped to contain the harmful AI. In effect, this makes the containment algorithm unusable.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/dutch-disruptors\/2020\/12\/15\/meet-the-4-scale-ups-using-data-to-save-the-planet\/\">Meet the 4 scale-ups using data to save the planet<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;study found that no single algorithm could calculate whether an AI would harm the world, due to the fundamental limits of computing:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>Assuming that a superintelligence will contain a program that includes all the programs that can be executed by a universal Turing machine on input potentially as complex as the state of the world, strict containment requires simulations of such a program, something theoretically (and practically) impossible.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This type of AI remains confined to the realms of fantasy \u2014 for now.
